Launch Day

And so the story begins.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way..."

(P.S. I didn't write that part above, but I could have!)

Here is a little inspiration music to listen to as you read along....

I never get tired of going to Copper Canyon. Always a new experience. This will be my third trip in two years and second trip of this year. A few new characters in the mix this time. This is the team:

Burt (Mi Vale Madre) Yamaha WR250R with X wheels (stock photo from previous trip)
IMGP2189.JPG

Brad (Bgunn) Yamaha Wr250R
Huh, don't seem to have a photo. Contributions welcome.

Tim (Live2Ride) Suzuki DRZ400S
IMGP0012

Jim (Severely) Suzuki DRZ400E with big bore kit
IMGP0010

Harvey Suzuki DR350 with big bore kit
IMGP0014

Myself, Doug (Chabon)
IMGP2197.JPG

and Ken (The Walrus) will be at home base acting as the official TURD (Trip Underlord Rescue Division). Hopefully we will not need to be troubling him.

The plan is to meet up in Yuma as our jumping off point. Jim and Harvey will be coming in from Kansas City, myself from California, Burt and Brad will be wintering in Yuma, and Tim from Spokane.

Departure will be November 16 with the original return date sometime after Thanksgiving. Lots of prep on the moto, order TVIP import papers online (about $40 out of pocket, the rest is refunded on return), other guys already had papers by the time I arrived. I still needed my tourist card and picked that up at San Emeterio (about 20km south of the border) for about $23 and 10 or 15 minutes. It is a lot easier here as you will probably be the only person at the aduana.

IMGP0006

I've done this ride a few times and didn't take many photos of this part. But here is a shot on Highway 2, just south of the border.
IMGP0018

Our plan is to make it to Santa Ana the first night. It takes about 3 days of riding to get to our entrance point into the canyons near El Fuerte.
IMGP0019

Make it to hotel ($280 pesos) with time for a couple beers before dinner at Elba's.
IMGP0027

IMGP0025

New managment at hotel. WTF -Doesn't allow drinking beer outside of the rooms. Not your typical USA hotels down here. Toilet seat optional, hot water optional, AAA rating - none. Still, I sleep better here than at home.
IMGP0024
IMGP0028

I work around construction and am always impressed with how they get things to work down here without a Home Depot.
IMGP0029

Some GPS graphs and tracks. I am using my Montana 600 which does a pretty good job. 320 miles today.

GraphtoSantaAna

YumatoSantaAna

Tomorrow will be a run for Navajoa, getting us another 300 miles closer.

Glad to see a RR without problems. I got a bit concerned when y'all headed norte as early as you did. I had no reason to kick the TURD into action however, thanks for the multiple SPOTS and checkin messages.....you may continue..........

PS Why are you standing outside drinking beer.......hmmmmm.......

If your bike weighs more than 400lbs. You might not make it.

So I check out 79842 on google maps. What the heck are those black and white dashed lines? Never seen that on google maps...

Now that would be an adventure on a Commando!

Ken, you are one outstanding TURD. Not sure why my SPOT didnt check in every night. I changed batteries and that seemed to help. Ya, we made a quick U-Turn del norte at Batopilas and missed the best parts of the canyon. Oh well, thats just an excuse to go back again!

As far as drinking beer in the parking lot, well, you can imagine the look on Burt's face when the guy said he couldnt drink beer there
