Great report! I've been spectating the past couple of days and enjoying the journey, but it looks like Photobucket is trying to take that away now.

OH NO!
I'll try and figure out what happened.
I have a flickr pro account, so I'll be able to replace all the photos if necessary. It will just take a while.
CRAP.
sorry, guys

And thanks so much for your efforts to put this together, We all know it's a lot of work to do this just to share with others. I'm sure I speak for most folks when I say it is greatly appreciated. One of the best reports I've read.

F'ing photobucket was just holding our pictures hostage.
I've paid the ransom

Again, thanks so much for all the kind words - I'm just happy that someone wanted to read this stuff!

Thanks, larryboy - great information! I wondered about that. Unfortunately, we still would have been driven to check those roads, I think. The roll chart put us on a few of those point one, dead end roads, but only for .25 or .75 miles before turning off onto another road.

Even more respect for doing it with the roll charts. I couldn't imagine having to follow them and keep rolling the charts all the time, keeping the odometer sync'd, etc.
Having a good GPS with the route in Topo made it so easy to stay on the trail. If you make a wrong turn you know right away. You can concentrate more on the road and the scenery, just glancing at the GPS every few moments.
It's a bit of work to put the routes in, but so worth it. And well worth the cost of the GPS and software.

So, what's next? Once you get the bug, you're always thinking of the next ride.
Have you thought of getting a starter bike to learn to ride and eventually ride along with Matt?

Debrief?

What was the final damage report from the crash? It seems you have made it home OK, so it must not have been as bad as it seemed at first, eh?

Will you do a "what worked, what didn't" post?

It's always interesting to hear what riders perspective is after the ride.

Thanks for taking us along; great writing, great photos, hope you heal up soon.

Matt's been working on this one. A couple of years ago, I got a TTR125LE for our 10th anniversary! Oh, you didn't know? The traditional tenth year gift is "dirtbike." He had his work cut out for him - I can't even drive a stick-shift car.
He's a demanding teacher, though. On my first trail ride there were water crossings, rocky riverbeds, sand, single track (almost fell down a ravine), and steep rutted declines. Not exactly beginner friendly.

Here's a little video from one of my practice/skill building days (super dorky - don't laugh ):

Aside from some flailing in the rocks at Carnegie, I think this was my second or third day in the dirt. The previous day, I was too chickensh*t to even start the bike until matt called me a "big baby."

I was just starting to ride standing up when matt had a big crash (we had to cut the trip short to go to the ER) and it freaked me out. I haven't ridden my bike since. Once my injuries heal and I can walk better, we're going to dust off the TTR and give it another try...Maybe there'll be a XT225 Serow in my future...

Is it the norm to do a follow up post for a ride report? Do you guys care what we brought? What we'd do differently? If someone actually wants to read that stuff, I'm happy to write it...

Yup, get back on that horse. Might I suggest a nice grassy field to practice on.
Build up your skill and confidence for a while before trying the gnarly stuff.
You have to walk before you can run, right.

Anyway, I think it's awesome and I enjoyed your report.
Especially now as I am leaving Sunday to ride the TAT again.

Heal and rest, you've earned it!!

John
