Micks Weekend Adventures in SEQ 08/09 Aug 2009

Day 1: Well they say, "the best laid plans of mice and men always go ary" but who cares as long as you had a good time.

My plan was to ride from my home in Dipswich, I mean Ipswich in South East Queensland to the Border Ranges National Park in NSW.

My first mistake was leaving the bike loading to the morning of departure, trying to find all the bits I wanted to take so carefully hidden by my kids the week before. As I was packing my recently acquired tyre levers and tubes, the thought occured to me I have nothing to inflate the tyre.

So finally bike is loaded and a quick stop to Supercheap Auto to purchase a small compressor. While I was stowing it away I noticed a leather clad old man walking towards me. The next 20 mins was spent yapping about bikes with a die hard Harley Rider. Anyway he was a nice guy and was genuinely interested in where I was going and my KLR650.

Finally away now the pics.

At a distance my first thought was WTF,,, closer up it turned out to be a snake.

I turned off onto the Mt Lindsay HWY and headed for Rathdowney where I met the owner of this Vstrom his name was Ben. We spent about 30 mins yapping about bikes and he told me he had ridden down to Flinders Ranges. He gave me some good ideas like wrapping your grips with Tennis Racket Grip Tape stuff thingy,, you know what I mean.

I refueled at the Servo in Rathdowney then headed off down Running Creek Rd

I cooked my lunch Tom Pipers Irish Stew or so it said on the can. Made a cup of coffee and sat and scrachted my butt enjoying the scenery..Continued onwards...

Old Dwellings Lions Rd

Scenery was awesome

At this point I decided to head out back to home along Lions Rd as I did not really know how long it would take me to get out the other side.

Back onto Lions Rd

Back over the Queensland Border,, Check for any stowaway rabbits

Absolutely breathtaking scenery, I spent a good bit of time here soaking it all up

Almost home turn off too Ipswich

Despite not accomplishing what I set out to do, I really enjoyed the day. Weather was perfect scenery was brilliant. Next time hopefully will have someone to ride with and share the fun.

Day 2: continues soon

Day 2: Different sort of riding, but an Adventure none the less

When I got back from my ride to the Border Ranges I had received an Email from my mate Budge wanting to go for a ride Sunday Morning.

Meet point was Yamanto McDonalds Sunday 8am. For a while I did not think he was coming. Budge finally turned up on his Virago 250. I was thinking he was going to ride his Suzuki 550 but alas he had problems starting it. As I was riding my ST1100 I decide to go back home and jump on the my Cruiser.

Anyway a few minutes later I was back. A rough plan was formulated and we headed of too Gatton via Walloon,Rosewood,Grandchester,Laidley and Forest Hill.

The Ulysses Club was building the car park. This is a club of old farts who like riding bikes. I think there motto is Grow old disgracefully. I should join because I now qualify. I am disgracefull. Oh and meet the age requirements.

First Stop was Gatton for coffee.....

Budges 250 Virago and My 86 750 Virago

Royal Hotel

After Coffee in the thriving metropolis of Gatton we decide to head up the Gatton Esk road find the turn off to Atkinson Dam and then head back home via Fernvale.

Alas we missed the turn. But ended up in Esk LOL

Ahhh the Ulysses Club had Obviously caught up with us there were bikes coming out of the woodwork.

Ahhh good a map

.....and more bikes

After consulting the map we headed off to Fernvale over the Wivenhoe Dam wall. Awesome,, behind us was a heap of bikes and the typically ignorant cage drivers.

Arrived in Fernvale guess what more bikes...

mmm a Bakery,,, can feel a sausage roll coming on

After spending 20 mins watching a Yummy Mummy putting her kids in the car. I finally managed to drag a trance like Budge away,, or was it me. Anyway we headed off back to home.

Day 2 pt 2 Coming

Day 2 pt 2...

Well I got back home from my ride with Budge with nothing planned for the afternoon,, no kids till Monday soooo... I went riding again. Rough plan head out back towards Esk via Fernvale to find the turn off to Atkinson Dam.

Who is this Helmeted Rider Identify yourself !!!

Don't you normally ride an Orange Bike ???????

With two bikes in tow

Wivenhoe Dam wall on Sunny warm day in QLD (and its Winter) hard to take

My 94 ST1100, Awesome bike to ride... The unidentified Helmeted Rider in the previous picture did a wheely on it ......

Panorama at the Dam Information Centre,,, Wivenhoe dam hold more water than Sydney Harbour.

Headed down turned off to Coominya found a sign that pointed me in the direction of Atkinson Dam...

Here it is...

Left Atkinson Dam and followed the signs to Gatton ahhh ploughed fields

My ST1100 smooth as silk

Must have taken a wrong turn ended back on the Warrego Highway so took the Plainlands exit and headed over to Laidley then onto Rosewood

My favourite last stop before home, small quiet park next to the 7 mile Bridge just outside of Rosewood

Back to Purple,, love the way its clour changes in different light

Bremer River at the 7 mile

After spending 40 mins just sitting watching the world go by as the sun went down I felt tierd but happy,, What an awesome weekend of riding, great weather in one of the best places in the world.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO - what a ride!"
