Saturday 8th August

The day started with Tina adjusting all our tyre pressures for the trails. Oh btw, what did Timpolino have to say about your set-up, Sarah?

Then we met Mr Laney who had kindly volunteered to show us the local lanes. As it turned out, he had also invited a group of blokes along which was not really what we had in mind... After all, it was a Dirty Girls weekend! Him alone we would have happily declared a honorary DG - but a whole bunch of males?

So we thanked him very much and set off on a route that Tina and I had devised the evening before - with the aid of a map marked-up by Muddymatt who had been on the island with the Muddy Monkeys in July. Our feelings for Matt should change between gratitude, amazement and wrath during the course of the weekend - you will see why, as the story unfolds...

The first byway was nice and twisty but paved. Although this side street could have done with some lawn mowing 'Dirty Girls' style...

We did a few short and unspectacular trails and then headed to Port Erin for fuel and a bit of sight-seeing. Beautiful place and very friendly people. Searching the entrance to the next lane, I took the wrong turn and landed - after a lovely gravel hairpin bend - in somebody's backyard. I apologised profusely to the landlady but she just laughed, said we shouldn't worry and gave us detailed directions to the 'Rocky Road' leading to Fleshwick Bay.

The perception of motorcyclists on the island was a real revelation for us. All the locals we spoke to were extremely friendly and helpful and made us feel really welcome. The only grumpy walkers who didn't greet us back were probably tourists from the mainland...

An additional proof of the positive attitude towards trail riders is the exemplary sign-posting of the lanes. Here the entrance to Carnanes

A small step for mankind...

... a slightly bigger one for Emmsy...

Sarah's turn...

Not sure what she wants to tell us here?

Lovely lane - grassy ruts...

... sandy climbs...

... plenty of opportunities for gorse diving...

... and fantastic views - Port St Mary in the distance

Tina whizzing up the hill

Pure pleasure lying ahead

... against the backdrop of picturesque Port Erin

Here come the girls...

Practising for the next synchronised trail riding competition...

When we emerged from the following track onto the A27, I realised that we weren't far from the entrance to the trail leading to the notorious "Edwina's Gully". So for the ones of you who are not 'Muddy Monkeys', I might have to go into a bit more detail...

'Doarlish Cashen' how the lane is officially called, is a bit tricky to ride and in places it is actually physically impossible to get a bike along while sitting (or standing) on it. The following pics are shamelessly stolen from Muddymatt but they should give you a good impression what all the fuss is about:

Tina and I were seriously tempted - but everybody else who had seen pictures of "Edwina's Gully" had strongly advised us against riding this trail (including Muddymatt himself, all our other halves and Mr Laney). In the end we listened to the voices of reason (mainly Sarah & Emma's... ) but still thought we'd at least pose at the start of the lane

By the way, nice job finding the trail in the first place, boys - the entrance is quite difficult to spot from the road

I think, it took Tina a while to get over it...

The next byway branched off from the 'Round Table' and lead us into the lovely Glen Rushen - a lane that had it all: jumps...

Puddles...

Nice countryside around...

Rocky descents...

Fords...

More scenery...

... and bullsh*t - oops, sorry...

For lunch we stopped - a bit prematurely but nonetheless it was more scenic than in the intended spot - at Beckwith's Vein, an old disused mine

Your tailpack is definitely not the best place to transport your sandwich - even if it's made of solid homebaked German wholemeal bread...

It's good to be a Dirty Girl on the Isle of Man

So, that's it for now - I really, really have to do things about the house. More to follow tonight hopefully.

I lived over there for a couple of years and it seemed like everyone i knew was a fan of bikes whether they owned a bike or not, trail or road(thats what it feels like from 8 years ago anyway). Bike tourists are a big part of the islands economy. Seeing those photos is bringing back lots of memories,i used to go running over the North Barrule (mountain) up on the north of the island on saturday afternoons.I loved it up there,on a clear day you could see Ireland,Scotland,England and Wales.

Wow! What a wonderful write-up!

This really should be in the 'Ride reports and pics, pics, pics' forum for more of the world to enjoy.

Sure looks like a LOT of fun. Thank you so much for sharing.

From WAY across the pond, Mark H.

Jersey and Gurnsey dont have much(??) Scotland is pretty much closed. Ireland i think is limited to the Wicklows (?) France...... sure someone might know(anyone?) Pyrinees is fantastic, Portugal looks like heaven. Think the last two are for next year.

Slider and Spout have offered to show us the Peaks. Fancy that?.....looks a challenge. But to be fair to our partners in crime, they would probably like to join us on this one and i wouldn't mind.

Well done ladies

Just looking at the pics has me grinning hats off to the dirty girls for sorting themselves out a great few days riding.

Edwina's gully is an aquired taste I liked it that much we mysteriously ended up there again on the second day.

Good on you girls for getting out there and doing stuff.

Matt

You didn't try Dowse Road and Greeba Mill Road then

Stockfield Road was quite good

but Dalby Lhag Road (aka The Slabs) was better, with the drop down to Barrane of nearly 1000ft (300m) over 2 miles, the steepest bit being Kerroodhoo to Barrane at 600ft (190m) in 7/10 of a mile

Shame I left the island just over a week before you went over though!
