HOW THE NAME OF GRANTS PASS, OREGON, ORIGINATED
By Dan. L. Green
It is often asked why the name of Grants Pass is called a “pass”, as its locality does not suggest a pass in the mountains. The name “Grants Pass” originated during the Civil War and was applied to a pass on the highway about two and one-half miles northeast of the courthouse in Grants Pass. (Merlin Hill)

During the war the facilities for getting war news were very meager in this part of the country, the mail being carried overland by stage from Sacramento to Portland…news from the seat of war being from ten days to two weeks old.

The overland stage was daily each way. People that lived along the route where post-offices were, were far between. People would flock to the station along the line to get the latest war news by word of mouth from the driver, it being very apparent by the movements of General Grant and General Lee that a decisive battle would come off between the main contending armies.

At this time the stage company had a few men of the neighborhood employed to repair the roads. This little bunch of men were quietly seated in this above named pass and eating their lunch when the Concord coach with its four fine spirited horses and wide-awake driver rushed by at a lively speed.

Of course, the cry went up for the latest news. He yelled out that General Lee and his entire army had surrendered to Gen. Grant and peace was declared. It was proposed by someone of this little party of road workers that they call this little pass in the hills “Grants Pass”, perhaps not dreaming that the name would ever go any further.

but in the course of a few years, the people of the lower Rogue River Valley concluded to petition for a post-office to be established at the Dimmick stage station about two miles south of the above named little pass in the mountain.

The petition asked that Mr. Thomas Croxton be named as post-master and that the name of the office be “Grants Pass”. The office was established in a short time and remained at this old stage station until the Oregon & California railroad was completed through Oregon in the year 1887, when a railroad station and machine shops were established about half way between the Grants Pass post-office and the Rogue River.

In a short time the stage coaches were taken off the line and the carrying of the mail was turned over to the railroad company. Mr. John Howard, the first merchant of this railroad station was appointed post-master. Mr. Dimmick, post-master of the Grants Pass post-office, delivered the contents of his office to Mr. Howard. Of course, the first mail that Mr. Howard received at his office was directed to Grants Pass, and when Mr. Howard made up the outgoing mail he continued to use the Grants Pass stamp that Mr. Dimmick had used.

Thus the name descended, step by step, from the pass in the hills to the present beautiful town of Grants Pass, situated on the north bank of Rogue River in that very productive part of the lower Rogue River Valley…extending from Savage Rapids to Hell-Gate, which is in the near future to be called the Paradise of Southern Oregon.

The town is situated in a very attractive location, the ground gradually elevating to the northeast and the northwest, and thereby being beautifully situated for fine residence homes.

The land is very fertile, all the vegetables and fruit that thrive in Southern Oregon grow in asbundance in and around Grants Pass. The writer of the above was a resident of Josephine County during all of these events and took an active part in establishing a post-office at the Dimmick stage station about the year 1866.

Editor’s note: The Post Office was established in February 1865

If this is a stock S model make sure you do the 3X3 air box mod and rejet the carb, it will make a huge difference and cheap mod.

airbox mod done already, and jetting. This was an issue with air leaks and possible un seating of the little plastic retainer plug inside the slide, which would have let the needle just float,,seems to be fine now.
I rotated the clamps on the rubber grommet between carb and head, the suspected area of air leaks, that might have helped, but I think it needs some air filter type grease, or vaseline to help it seal better. It's 12 yrs old,,should probably swab all the rubber bits with glycerine to soften them up.
I'm waiting for a manual and studying all I can here, and elsewhere to learn more about the thing before I undertake any serious changes to it. It's plenty fun the way it is, for me,,maybe want more when I get used to riding it,,if it doesn't hurt me first in the process,,a distinct possibility,,
