Show Low to Salt River Canyon and back

Lunchtime, and I was at Show Low. Folks had told me before that the Show low to Salt River Canyon was lovely, so I took a side trip.

I thought at first this was the Salt River Canyon. I was wrong.

I see you brought a bicycle, so if the BMW breaks you can get to a starbucks & search for parts.

have a fun trip!

Thanks, rtwdoug!

Hope to swap lies with you when you return- my dad lives only 15 minutes away from you there in Blountsville.

I didn't use that damned bike but a handful of times for the month and a half I was gone. It was a cool concept on paper, but on the bike it was just a sail.

Carrizo, AZ

I passed this tiny little settlement in the rocky hills, marked by a sign that said, "Carrizo". I putted through the beaten-down town. Rez living's like nothing else to my round eyes- I'm shocked to see Americans living in this beautiful country in unmatched squalor- it just doesn't make sense. The thought, "third world" came to mind.

I saw Dennis watering a plant outside his house. His granddaughters were playing outside, and it was a nice tableau. I introduced myself and got a photo.

I found Salt River Canyon! Almost as big as the Grand Canyon, but you can drive down

i rode down and up and soaked in it s beauty, then up to Seneca, then took photos on the way back to Show Low.

The switchbacks, the views, the switchbacks...

Here's Seneca, which looks to be an abandoned resort. There's a manmade impoundment up there on the South rim of the canyon. There's old picnic tables, old cannibalized electrical junction boxes... it was kinda sad. It also looked like a great place to camp, if you're so inclined.

I saw a few lizards, and saw this sign:

I felt better after I saw this. It was a nice sign.

BTW, that's a bald eagle up there in the tree. Its spirit name was Colbert.

Salt River Canyon

I find that camera phones lack the proper focal length to capture the depth of grandeur.

Bike on bike or not, the R65 handled the carving curves well.
