Wasn't sure where that was at, then I found this http://www.santafetrailresearch.com/...odge-city.html

interesting tidbit "DAR Marker Number 66; The Marker was originally about 5 miles west of Dodge City, Kansas at High Rock, the first of four Points of Rock along the Santa Fe Trail, over looking the Trail. Until 1846, Mexico was across the Arkansas, to the east was Fort Atkinson, Fort Mann and The Caches. It was moved to the western edge of Dodge City in 1981 when the "High Rock" was blasted to "smithereens" to make way for road construction on US 50 highway."

I'm sure that was done in the name of progress

Nice pics!

Point of rocks just outside of Dodge City is where the silhouette's of horsemen stand on whats left of the landmark, seems like I read that the last visible piece is close to being removed for the highway to expand again.

There was more than one land mark known as point of rocks along the Kansas portion of the San
ta Fe trail.

Point of rocks near Elkhart is the area where Jedidiah Strong Smith the mountain man was killed by Comanche as he was trying to make it to the Cimarron in search of water, the freight wagons he was guiding took the dry route that splits off near Wagon Box springs, he had left the wagon train of freight behind on the Santa Fe trail. The other land mark other than near Dodge and Elkhart is Pawnee Rock, they used these land marks to judge time and distance on the trail. Great pics Viper!

Link to article about Point of Rocks on the Santa Fe trail near Dodge City, Kansas, and the construction work.

http://www.kansas.com/2014/03/10/333...er-option.html

1922 shows the Point of Rocks near Dodge City before nearly 80 percent of the hill was removed for the construction of U.S. 50.

Today.

Pawnee Rock

And a few pics of Pawnee Rock, on the Santa Fe trail, about seventy miles northeast of Dodge.

At the base of Pawnee Rock.
