That is a sig-worthy line right there. I think I might just change mine to it. It's much more concise than my "there's a saying about the worse the discomfort in going through something, the more satisfaction there is afterwards" that I say occasionally.

I wish I could claim it as my own, but no, I picked it up somewhere. I thought it might be from Kipling or maybe Twain, but Google is no help as to the source.

Cheers.

From this photo it's some what hard to believe that interesting terrain lies just ahead

Looking the other direction the Arikaree Breaks

When the above road was built the road crew discovered something that had been hid for many years. Seems the road maintainer fell through a cave used by horse thieves in the area

The only thing left of the cave is the entrance.

The cave was dug out and had two rooms. The larger back room housed the horses while the front room was the cooking and living area. The maintainer had fallen through the back room. Later the dirt from the hills above finally filled in most of what was left. There's still an small "bowl" section behind the entrance area where the main room was.

Lots of cool roads in that album. Where is this bridge?

Thanks for the reply BHumW!
This bridge is in Butler County, SE of El Dorado on 70th and just west of Walnut Valley Rd.

These arched bridges are scattered across eastern Kansas, quiet a few of them are in the southeast part of the state, lots of European stone workers in these areas back when.

I sure missed my rides on the plains this year. Such a special place. I just took on too much to "stop and smell the grasslands". I usually ride the plains in the winter. Also special time. Thanks for all the great pix and stories.
