Piccolino and Patagonian Fox, thank you for your contributions. It's interesting to see the plains from other than North America as well.

Fantastic thread! Hey Bill: Keep at it. You're greatly influencing my route planning for a x-country I'm setting up for next spring.

Wow! this thread has amazing photography in it! I would love to come out to the Great Plains and shoot some storm photos at some point

Here are a few from when I traveled thru...

Rest stop near car henge, NE.... (farmer with a sense of humor!)

Badlands, SD....

(me in 2006)

and... somewhere at a rest area.... probably Montana...

I gotta get back out there one of these days! As "boring" as it was when I was there, when I look back, and when I look at these photos you all have posted, I remember the hidden beauty that one would normally miss when all you are thinking about is "when do we get there"

Reading through the posts on this thread got me motivated to do a Western Nebraska/South Dakota back roads tour last week. I have some other Nebraska Sandhills shots I posted in the ride report I did on the ride. They're here...

Except for on I-80, I hadn't been out that way in many years. Going through some of those small towns on NE 2, US 20 and NE 12 was terrific. I should have done it years ago.

I had to make a quick trip to Denver earlier this week and passed this marker along hwy 36 in northern KS.

The actual spot is three north and one west so I decided to check it out.

The center of the US and the center of the Great Planes.

With the roads muddy from all the rains, I roamed around in the truck a bit Saturday:

Took a poorly maintained road I'd not been on before - and before it got too muddy I was treated to some nice colors:

The light was pretty much dead by the time I found this little gem - will have to go back and catch it again a little earlier...
