Something that has bothered me is the wheel spacers, they bear on a seal at the inner end, how is this lubed? One of the seals on my bike appears to be falling apart already.
I'm with you on the quality thing, if they didn't have BMW written on them you'd reckon they were a cheap peice of junk.
For instance the headlight support that on the boxers is steel tubing, on the F8 it's plastic, have a look at it, it is complex and no doubt hugely expensive, but it is as weak as piss, I know, I've busted mine in a low speed off, I fixed it with a bit of sheet steel and pop rivets, but it sure doesn't smack of quality.
$150.00ish USD.

LILGS, thanks for the bearing measurements. I'm going to go ahead and change mine, I think.

Help my feeble mind if you would mate. What #'s are for the rears and what are for the front ?
3 rear and 2 front, is that right ?

5 x 6204 high speed bearings - sealed Use a good quality bearing that you can source.



3 x 30 x 47 x 7 - 30mm ID x 47mm OD x 7mm wide- seals 2 in the rear and one for front.





1 (do you mean 2?) x 25 x 47 x 7 -25mm ID c 47mm OD x 7mm wide- seals



Front seal, front shaft fits into this seal on the RHS

...and so it goes.

Well, got the wheel into San Jose BMW this morning. Sure enough, the hub is trashed. Tech had to use a torch to get the rotor side outer race out of the buggered hub. Good guys there went ahead and jammed in a replacement bearing in so I can at least roll the bike onto a trailer to bring her home. They did not have to do that, and I appreciate it. Obviously the concern would be that if the bike were ridden it would self-destruct in short order. We shall see what happens next. When I get a replacement wheel or hub I'm just sending both wheels to Woody's to lace on proper rims and strong spokes. I will also install quality sealed bearings. As long as the scooter (assuming some bubbas have not already stolen it) will be down for awhile, I may as well do things right.

No worries..

the bearings are exaclty the same for both front and rear. the only difference is in the seals.

the rear hub uses a bearing either side and the cush drive uses a bearing as well as it is a seperate piece. so 3 x bearings on the rear hub and 2 x 30 x 47 x7 seals. there isnt a part number on the seals as your bearing stockist should keep them in stock they are a standard seal and can get them anywhere.

the front hub uses the same 6204 bearing and 1 x 30 x 47 x7 seal on the left side and 1 x 25 x 47 x7 on the right side. this seal has thr front axle shaft run through the seal instead of a spacer. thats why it requires a 25mm id seal.


5 x bearings. 3 for rear and 3 for front
3 30mm id seals for rear and one for l/h/f
1 25mm id seal for r/h/f

As long as you use a good bearing thats all that matters. I was just lucky mine didnt destroy my hub at the time so i was lucky.. i was pretty mad to say the least, i've had trail bikes to 20k klm in dirt sand mud and crap and have survived that treatment..

replace them even if it is at your expense it may save your life!

this doesnt mean the new ones wont be an issue on the future it just means that it should prevent failure at least with a better quality bearing. you dont need a ceramic or some expensive bearing because mud will get in there and they will in time need replacing again but just use a good bearing.

That was my exact approach. all except the part where you had BMW touch your bike again .. not a chance!

do it right and you shouldn't have an issue, perhaps you should complete your little wheel project and send BMwankers the bill?..

everything to do with the wheels are puss!
I now run an excel S7 high tensile Double Sig rims, 8 guage SS HD spokes and nipples and quality bearings/seals.. woody couldnt come up with a combo quick enough so i took it into my own hands..

I am sure if know if the hub is trashed, but the manual says to apply 100c heat to the hub to pull or put them in.
I am really surprise your dealer would not warranty that item. Seems unusual at 6,000 miles and potentially life threatening. Not exactly good publicity for BMW and I would think it would motivate them to keep you happy.
