excellent hooks scottmac (nice pics) and unless someone knows about a space limitation you are in

I read USFS closes SCRR in November (probably to save it from erosion) so we should just sneak in - unless the predicted El Nino gives us a wet October. Could be a muddy mess!

Don't tell anybody but those pics were taken early last
December - SCRR was closed but we made an exeption.

Our group never saw another vehicle up there all afternoon.

dang...

The Ponderosa Fire is near the intersection of SCRR and Nascimento-Fergusson Rd!

http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/lospadres/ab...11-mrd/map.pdf

I don't think the road is closed yet, and we have a month+ before the ride... just hoping the fire does not damage the road or lead to a temporary closure.

Cone Peak Road in Feb `06...

The turnaround at the end of Cone Peak Road...

Sorry for the crappy quality of the photos.

Maybe the roads will be open by the time the end of October comes around? Lots of fun stuff around there...

Late Spring is a good time up there too, especially when the Monarchs are doing their thing. It was surreal, thousands would swarm as we rode through the thick chapparal areas. Just sayin'..

Great pics folks! Snow to butterflies... very cool.

pierce, that closure order says for fire so if its controlled then there's no risk of fire... but probably a new order to keep the area clear for clean up work.

A closure order is still in effect for the area surrounding the fire, excluding the roads and two campgrounds ...

Last month I rode on SCRR but came to a gate after about 7 miles. On two occations there was a cage coming around a turn on my side. If I was not riding way right- smack. I never saw Los Burros Rd, guess I have to go back.

That's wild...I've ridden out there numerous times and have only seen one other car. It was full of scowling hikers on their way to the Cone Peak trailhead. I guess they didn't like seeing bikes on "their" road.

Another shot of SCRR south of Los Burros...

Hey Jim,

It sounds like you may have taken the fork into Plaskett canyon, it's
about 7 miles south of Nacamiento Rd. by my recollection.

That road is gated as it goes across private property. Left at the
fork takes you for many, many more miles along SCRR.

When SCRR forks, stay to the left. This will keep you on SCRR and another
10 miles or so to the SCRR/Los Burros Rd. junction. It's got a nicely
marked county sign so its hard to miss. If you keep going south
on SCRR from this point it finally does dead end at a gate about 12-15
miles farther south.

Los Burros/Willow Creek road drops you back down to HWY1 just north of
Gorda. It's about 25 miles from Nacamiento Rd. down SCRR and Los Burros/
Willow Creek to 1.
