Secondly, dearest Staghound, it worked, I was slightly distracted trying to pull down a 4gb software update on an intermittent slower-than-dial up speed-wireless-pay-as-you-go-dongle and was momentarily be-fuddled by your joke, what can I say - ya got me
Firstly, dearest Tenderfruit, I can see your reasoning, there's no point in ruining an otherwise well executed bike with shoddy parts, and if your acquisition was delayed by a roadworthy cert then it's fair enough. I guess my feeling comes from reading thru a pile of Classic Bike magazines & being struck by the sheer number of obsessive-turd-eating-completists who are seemingly determined to drive up the price of NOS or replica parts to obscene levels by paying thru the nose for components that could be satisfactorily substituted, and indeed back in the eras in question were substituted. I recently saw a friend pay over a grand (£) for some NOS Suzuki X7 exhausts, when originally in the late '70s/early '80s we considered them sooooo ugly we couldn't wait to rip them off & replace them with Micron Spannies or whatever. I guess my opinion is skewed by the context, in that the magazines exist to serve their advertisers 1st and readers 2nd, and therefore deliberately foster this 'pay any cost' attitude at the detriment of their readers? Also, I have to say, I go to classic meets and am greeted by lines of original spec BSA or Triumphs or whatever, and it all seems a bit pointless you know. It's like a mechanical version of "I'm Brian/Spartacus", but then I guess I'm just an inverted snob, and don't have the patience, finance or mechanical skill to reach their level of finish. The bike pictured looks great :-) Edit: it occurs to me to mention I mean the bike in Tenderfoots post.
