Talking Monaco - Street circuit my ass...

Much as I enjoy the Grand Prix of Cashistan, and tho the GP2 & 3 drivers strove to extend the limits of safe city driving:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...&v=Vl3pwwxcWkc

And even tho Monaco produced a great finish in '82:

This is street racing:

With telemetry, but with added German voice-over, which explains in detail why BM's are Grrrrrrrrreat!?!*

Same rider

Incomplete lap, but got to love that very early actuated auto gear-change

Or if you want, inexplicably, to torture yourself with the whole thing.

Though I myself, if asked to pick a favourite from that general period/genre, would of course select 'Passport to Pimlico'

Though unfortunately in this case most of the links to the full movie seem to link to external ciphers. This must be because it is better and terefore not given away like George Fucking Formby...

Of course, there's lots of old films out there:

Er...

And a gearbox oil change, and getting another rear tyre/ire off a 750 kettle, and getting the pack to register as a track marshal & attend an introduction day, and getting a slot serving tea, and all the other stuff.

The observant viewer might note the identity of the rider seemingly retiring number 15 @ 1 min 50 - winner of the '78 Race of Aces & the boycotted Spa 500GP in '79. The footage seems counterinfomatory because, as previously pictured, by my research he seems to have finished 3rd in Hailwoods TT of '79? Perhaps the footage shows him getting lost on the way to parc ferme? He did a bit better in the Classic TT in '82 tho...

REPORT ON QPC AUDIO RECORDING STUDIO/MAKING POPULAR MUSIC.
DANIEL JOHN. CREATIVE AUDIO WORKER. MAY '94,

OVERVIEW.
The core of the QPC Audio Recording system was acquired in 1986 and was largely unused until a series of courses were devised by myself and the Centre Director. I planned, administered and taught a series of Level 1 Sound Recording Weekends through 1991, to introduce members to the sometimes confusing world of Sound Recording, the success of this undertaking was reflected in my appointment under an Employment Training Work Placement beginning in early 1992, part of which was to take and pass a City & Guilds examination in Sound Recording.

We had found that although students were satisfied with the course they needed support and technical backup to continue their learning, the appropriate mix of skills had not been available in the Centre staff at that time. As part of the placement we introduced a Level 2 Sound Recording Course, and began a weekly Songwriting & Recording Workshop. I also undertook a number of other duties including the repair and upkeep of QPC/Limelight Audio equipment. In late 1992 the placement contract ended.

During early 1993 there was a pause in the project with no staff or volunteers able to supervise and work with clients. This caused the Songwriting and Recording Workshop to stumble for lack of direction. As a result, the Committee voted to create the post of Creative Audio Worker with a brief to 'Encourage, support and develop the creative use of the Audio medium by the community of Aylesbury and its environs'. We agreed the post to run for 15 Hours P/Wk.

Early in 1993 the Centre had acquired an ATARI computer to run Music Sequencing Software (the musical equivalent of Word Processing) and under the new contract we introduced a series of 'Introduction to MIDI' Weekends to run alongside the Level 1 & 2 Sound Recording Weekends. These courses have run regularly to the present day, catering for a wide range of students including School teachers and their pupils.

SONGWRITING & RECORDING WORKSHOPS.
Since early in 1992 I have run a weekly Songwriting & Recording (SW & R) Workshop with a core of 7/8 regulars though the group can reach 15. There is a natural split between the two areas covered with a group in the Studio working on Sound Recording/Music Sequencing while others play together in the Music Room. I have on occasion split this group, putting the more acoustic based Musicians into another space.

Although attendance varies according to season the group often settles into a 3 week cycle during which the players work together to write a piece which the Engineers then record on the third session.

This workshop offers a forum for entry level Musicians to meet and work with others. It also gives an easy access route to Sound Recording, generating bookings for the weekend courses.

THE RECORDING STUDIO.
The QPC Studio is available for hire to anyone who has satisfactorily attended our course, or can demonstrate equivalent knowledge. Although bookings have steadily increased they tend to peak after courses while students reinforce their learning before applying it to their home systems. I have been available for technical advice and 'TLC' to assist students as they master technology as a tool for the production of Music.

Sound Recording is an integral part of music making today and the QPC Studio offers an opportunity to get valuable 'hands on' experience of recording technology. This facility has also been used to produce soundtracks for the QPC Pantomime and other plays including the Jigsaw Theatre Disability Arts Group. With the appointment of 'Mr. Fake Sadbore' the usage has extended into a number of Sound for Video Projects, and as Video grows within the Vale there will be an increasing need for higher quality soundtracks.

We have now reached the point where the size of the Studio space is restricting the work we are able to undertake. In the SW & R Workshop for example I am only able to cater for 3 Sound‑recordists, while 3 ‑ 5 others are not able to fit in. In addition to this the lack of even basic soundproofing both for the control room and Music Room (Creche) severely limits the usability of the system.

OTHER WORKSHOPS.
For the past year we have been running weekly percussion workshops taught by a local musician. Due to the ongoing success the Centre has invested in a small range of percussion instruments for use in this and other groups. We have now extended the project into a Saturday afternoon 'Young Percussion' group. A Beginners Guitar group has recently started and we hope to consolidate this workshop over the next term.

In addition we have hosted a number of one‑off workshops in association with other organisations, and are planning to extend this area of work.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS.
Although I have a strong interest in the provision of entry level arts opportunities I am also aware that we need to involve higher level practitioners to offer incentive and example to beginners. This practice has already shown great success in both painting and pottery where more experienced artists encourage beginners, run workshops etc. After consideration I feel that there are two main areas for future development which will offer better opportunity to beginners while encouraging more advanced clients..

EQUIPMENT UPGRADE: My clients hit a barrier as the equipment limits their capacity to work through their ideas to anything more than rough quality. This is a situation which in any other area would be considered unacceptable and to resolve it I suggest two key purchases in the next 12 months. We should upgrade the Multi Track Tape Recorder from the present 4 Track to a Fostex R8 8 Track, and we should acquire a Sampler. This device records and manipulates sound in the digital domain and would have a huge range of applications in Video and Theatre soundtracks as well as music. This upgrade will provide a strong overall package to allow serious recordings, and fully integrates with the recently acquired Video equipment.

SPACE UPGRADE: The current space is now becoming too small to cater for the numbers and types of enquiry coming in. By upgrading the space allocated to Music we can further encourage participation as well as offering rehearsal space to suitable artists, feeding clients into the studio - recording is a natural consequence of rehearsal. I am aware that provision is being made in the planned conversion of the annexe, though this may take some considerable time and there is a demonstrable need now.

CONCLUSION.
To date over 175 people have attended Audio related courses at QPC. We have received coverage in national magazines, on local/intercounty radio and through local/intercounty press. Past students have gone on to complete high level courses gaining work in the professional world, others have simply reported a highly positive injection into their enjoyment of music making.

The facility offers service to areas of Music and Sound Recording/Music Sequencing not covered by any other organisation in the Vale. As a result of the initiative here at QPC similar projects are being started, with our support, in both Milton Keynes and High Wycombe.

Over the past three years we have built a firm foundation of working audio practitioners given the available facility. I feel that the time has now come to open the project up to wider access, to consolidate the work already completed. In order to achieve this I feel we will need to move some way toward the suggestions outlined above, as well as increasing the support available to clients.

If you would like any further information please feel free to contact me.
