Dear Daniel

A place has been reserved for you to attend a Taster Day at Silverstone Circuit on 29th July 2012.

Silverstone Circuit will send your ticket about a week before, to allow you access to the Circuit. If you are no longer able to attend this date, please advise me as soon as possible. We may be able to offer you an alternative date later in the year.

When you arrive at the circuit, make your way to the Paddock Bar adjacent to the North Pits (old pits) you should arrive in time 0815 for a 0830 start, here you will be met by your Taster Day Leader.

In preparation for the tour you should:

  • Wear outdoor clothing suitable for dirty areas (NOT Red or Yellow), and flat shoes suitable for walking on uneven ground (there will be a lot of walking!)
  • Waterproofs. In case it rains, as much of the tour is NOT undercover
  • Something to eat at lunchtime, or money to purchase food
  • Stout gardening gloves if you wish to be on post in the afternoon (not guaranteed)
  • A high visibility vest will be supplied on the day

If after your tour you decide Marshalling is an interest that you want to pursue I have provided the web links to the forms you will need to complete to join our Marshals Club www.marshals.co.uk/resources/33777567447.doc . You will also need to register with the MSA using these guidelines www.marshals.co.uk/resources/18717940785.pdf to complete the registration form www.marshals.co.uk/resources/2298376224.pdf both forms should be forwarded to the address on the BMMC membership form.

I hope you enjoy your day at the circuit. Please let me know how you get on.

Regards

Dave Reed

"They control us with poverty and hunger. That is African control. If you don’t have money in your pocket and you’re hungry, you have to take some shit from your boss so you do not die. But here in the West they control you with something known as debt…So they give you this credit so you think you got some shit, and you go into the world and you spend this shit, then you realize – you ain’t got to shit man! So you got to take some shit from your boss to pay your credit! Same thing, different packaging."

Thumb The only 'Lympic event I've an interest in...

It is of course highly in vogue to either praise or damn the up-coming 'Sport-Fest' ubiquitously known by the innocuous litigation-free generic term 'That Which Cannot Be Named For Fear Of Copyright Infringement Notices'*, but I have to admit that of all the multiplicity of variegated bread & circuses imminently on offer, only one single thing catches my eye - Alex Zanardi @ the Paralympic Cycling @ Brands Hatch 3rd to 5th September**

FORMER F1 & World Touring Car driver and dominant Champ Car racer Alex Zanardi sampled the Brands Hatch Paralympic circuit yesterday on a handbike ahead of September’s Paralympic Games.***

My only remaining living hero...

“But when you reach the penultimate climb going to the hairpin (Druids) you are already very tired but you know that if you are more or less close enough in terms of time to your opponents, this is the area where you are either going to win or lose the race. You’ve got to be really able to make the difference in the last two climbs."...
If I can make sense of the 'Lymic track maps (links @ A close-up & B overall) then they'll be starting/finishing using the Brabham Straight, turning left onto the service road behind the main stands and back out towards the gate lower left in pic below. Out onto the main road of Gorse Hill****, then winding along Scratchers Lane, which if memory serves used to have the back entrance to the camp site one third of the way along it? The track continues along Scratchers Lane which then runs by the M20 trunk Road that's visible along the top of the picture below...

http://www.easytrack.co.uk/bike-track-day-booking/bbh220312-bike-track-day-brands-hatch-22nd-march-2012/

It then seems to join Brands again at Westfield Bend, out of view top right in that pic above. Back round the 'wrong way' along Minter Straight, left round Hawthorn and down Hawthorn Hill coming into the above pic high right, then all the way up under the bridge and up Pilgrims Drop. Over the top of that long sustained climb and sharp down into Surtees. Round the flat Cooper Straight and to the bottom of Graham Hill. This obscene climb to Druids is followed by an equal but opposite zoom on the other side down Hailwood Hill... and then it seems like it looks as tho/ough they're supposed to climb UP Paddock Hill Bend(!?!)

They then dip into the paddock behind the pits and down to the end of Clearways/start of Clarke Curve, where they rejoin the Brabham Straight and rise back towards the start/finish. I'm not sure that's a true interpretation, but if so then that's an enormous challenge?!? I'd find it hard enough to walk it. Once Maybe I've got it wrong and the distance categories will branch out from this loop rather than repeating it for the long events? But then I do have to mention that the published info isn't entirely clear, and that could be interpreted as Anti'Lympics, which might lead to legal proceedings...

That still pic above doesn't really do justice to the substantial elevations in question, let me rummage around and see if I can find a representative on-board or similar and then you can imagine the relevant sections of it backwards?... Ah, here's one, run it backwards from around 52 secs @ Westfield -

Or there's always this old Brands footage to give you an idea?

* Or, let alone name, it seems even think about without fear of arrest.
** It's naturally correct to note that so very many of the entrants in any of the events in either of the Games no doubt has a story equal in merit to that of Alex, and is as deserving of some ones attention & support for sure - I'm just saying he's got mine...

*** Text corrected for inaccuracies in original article.
**** Which if memory serves is downhill at this section?

If you know the background, I defy even the biggest of you bad assed old bastards to watch this last vid with a dry eye...

A message From Field-Marshal Marshal Marshall (pending)...

So then, the ticket has arrived for the BRSCC race meet @ Silverstone tomorrow, which as previously mentioned is my 'Introduction to Marshalling' day. I must arise at about the time I'm usually going to sleep, ride the 26 or so miles there (without being nearly rear-ended by a bus this time) & be at the North Pits Paddock Bar* around 8.15am for an 8.30 briefing on regarding sign-on procedure, and a safety briefing, which I imagine may mostly consist of 'DO WHAT YOU'RE TOLD' along with general orders not to get killed

I am aiming for an 8.00am arrival, which will of course allow time for a fried breakfast
There will be a guided tour, during which the letter emphatically advises us to ALWAYS follow the directions of the Tour Leader, and there is the possibility of placement on a marshalling post in the afternoon, though this is not guaranteed. The event programme can be viewed @, BRSCC final instructions @, and entries @.

Interestingly the ticket sent also has the Saturday entrance stub attached, so if I'd been a bit more organised I could have gone over today, had a days spectating and possibly camped in the Marshals camp-site? Next time maybe.

As far as I know the meeting is on the National Circuit, which is broadly similar to
the layout I used to attend three plus decades ago, tho/ough Becketts (after Maggots) is no longer the tight hairpin it was before the transformation of the right hand Becketts Corner into a high speed flip flop, and Wellington used to run right down to turn right at the Club Circuit iteration of Woodcote.

I'm reminded of the commentary on a handicap race at a small meeting there in the late 70's. Each competitor set off at a delay calculated on relative lap time by the handicappers, and as the last lap started the field had started to come together. I remember that just as the commentator was saying that if the handicaps had been calculated properly then the field should be together for the last corner, and at that very moment the
entire field came over the crest of the straight and into the last corner as one great rumbling mass of metal

http://www.silverstone.co.uk/track/c...ional-circuit/

*In pic below (an old Pre-Wang ariel shot), the Paddock Bar is probably the grey oblong above the 'pits straight' icon, to the left of the red & blue paintjob. I think that's it but it's been some ten years since I've been down that way? In at the bridge mid left, over the ringed bridge across the Wellington Straight and down a bit to the car-park. Probably

quote- Dear daniel.........quote

Hey planktonnn, I see you are disobeying the requirements of your mental-probationary contract by resorting to spurious aliases in order to gain access to major sporting venues, viz being "Daniel" so you can get a Marshall's Badge down at Silverstone Gulch......tsk, tsk and tsk!

Also, I didn't quite understand the Ass-trail 'butter on motorbike' comic allusion.....could you deconstruct it
syllable-by-syllable so as to make it easier to laugh at?

Also (2) I noticed that 'Cav' Cavendish did not win a gold medal today at the Hole-Implix....do you agree with me that if he had secreted a weed-wacker motor about his person*, he would have romped home?

* Possibly in the groin area, as their skin-tight lycra outfits leave very little to the imagination, and an engine down there would go unnoticed by the scrotum scrutineers.

Also (3) I noticed that, during the 240km road cycle race today, quite a few cyclists stopped by the side of the
road to relieve themselves, directly opposite a line of spectators. And on the BBC too!!

Also (4) have you (as "Daniel") any opinion on the fucking monstrosity which is plugin-container.exe? I think it has something to do with Flash player. The thing is, with such a heavily video-clipped thread such as this, it plays havoc with the smooth operation of my PC. I just thought I'd mention it.

Well, Duh! I get it now, if the robbers had nicked ass-trails butter and left it out on his motorbike, then he
wouldn't have to pay for it!
Silly me. The thing is, being robbers, they might nick his bike. Which would be funny.
