Oh, I love it. Few things I'd do differently of course, perhaps a different back end, but generally quite striking. The road tax on the DMW runs out next Fri & it'll be coming off the road for a bit of a medium scale rebuild/dewiring/work on the finish type period. I might take the tank down to metal & clearcoat it, get a bracing bar welded across the top subframe rails where I've chopped the hoop off, make sure all the wheel, swingarm, head bearings are ok etc. I've not got a great love of cosmetics, but I'll generally scrub it up a little.

In the mean time I've just picked up a lovely '85 R80RT to ride in the intervening period. I know one of the owners & he gave me a 100% discount on his half so I got a lovely deal Of course, to show good will & commitment I've put a 1 penny deposit down...

Laugh Circlipnews!!!circlipnews!!!circlipnews!!!

Straight off the ticker tape straight to your desk - it's CIRCLIP NEWS!!!

Yes, there is a saga developing based around a circlip. It's not even a circlip off a boxer, or indeed any form of two wheeler. It's the dash pot plunger retaining circlip off an SU carb on a Robin Reliant. And yes, it's the Reliant (!) that belongs to Asstral.

He's become almost unhealthily fixated on the arrival of a circlip to fit the carb damper plunger so that his little three wheeler runs. I say unhealthily, I guess I can understand his frustration as this is (probably, subject to other faults there almost certainly are lurking beneath the grime & oil & rusted subframe welds) keeping him off the road. And to be fair it does mean he can't get to the farmers market with his produce - but the number of texts I've had this week about the nonarrival in the post, or the attempt to visit another 9 or 10 shops to get one has, quite nearly, driven me to distraction.

I ordered him to cut back so I'm only getting one text a day to say it's not arrived now, which is fair enough as I can't go round to fit it if it's not there, but for a while I was getting minute by minute text updates on progress with finding somewhere that could sell him one that fitted.

In the process of all of this I'd fabricated a washer from thin plate as a stop-gap for one that should arrive with the circlip, but when all the right things arrive I'll be getting the hand crafted washer back & mounting it in the middle of an enormous frame. Do you think it would be cruel of me to fake the circlip pinging across the garden during fitting once it does bloody get here? And if it's ok to do, then how long should I let him search for it before calling the gag off?

It seems there might be one lurking in the MFM Western Regional Office, but you'd have to deal with that direct?

You mean two out of every three cars at every scrapyard in the country don't have SU dashpot carbs any more? It will probably run (possibly badly - how would you tell?) without the plunger piston installed - at least for a while.

Love the "fake loss of circlip" gag concept - Just so long as you don't actually lose the circlip - I recall jokingly suggesting you NOT crash the just-completed R80 RT - and we all know what happened next.

Well, there's no news really, as nothing's arrived, tho I'm still getting daily text updates about whether its arrived in the post. I had previously suggested the 'go to the scrapyard you twat' style approach as described by dear slartidbartfast (nice fjords by the way) however, as will be amply testified by pjcr12, you can't get thru to Asstral once he's got his mind set a certain way.

The bad news is that last night, amongst all the flying & nudity, I dreampt I'd found a circlip of the correct size...

Once financial transfers are complete...

Am now sole owner of STD1. DMW tax runs out tomorrow, needed MOT in August + new rear tire which is very tyred.

103.4 mile test ride. Top speed I ran was an effortless 100+ at way below red line in top. All fine :-D Steers really nicely, very natural roll into and out of corners, well balanced turns even with 2 heavy chains in top box, just have to remember that I now have indicators :-D Suspension feels good, will try the rear shock one preload down & see what it does, front end feels just right after 'K forks with progressive springs preloaded & thick oil & 1 atmosphere of air damping'. Bike feels light even at low speed. Brakes feel light compared to DMW but pads/shoes not run in, may add 2nd disk/caliper? Probably won't once current pads/shoes are scrubbed in. Got knack of extending sidestand while seated on bike. Easy to get onto centre stand. Bars in good position & offer plenty of leverage. Feet now programmed for footpeg position rather than rearsets, smaller feet mean gearchanges are easy. Box is smooth & can take clutchless changes, clutch feels good. Will change oil dipstick for temp guage and see what it's doing. Engine pulls nicely, interesting difference from 1k/40mm etc. Seat feels really good. Will sort intermittent high tickover 3k thing, all good though :-)
