Finally found the business card of Doc. McKenney

Bonjour Mark

Don't know if you remember me, I'm the tall french guy with a V-Strom, we met at lunch time at the very start of your long trip in small rest area near Thetfordmines, Quebec. I finally found the business card of Doc. McKenney on which you wrote your info that you kindly.
IMPRESSED to say the least. You guys make me dream of doing such a trip on the spot.
Great photos & comments, that will get me prepaired.
Hope for all of us that spring will come early so we get back riding.

Cheers to all!

Yes, I remember you. Glad you found your way here!

It really was a fantastic trip. If you have the opportunity to do it at some point, you should.

It's the Ricochet Offroad skid plate. I got it from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC.

Can't believe...

I just found this. Nice one, Mark. Labrador certainly does have a draw, if I remember any dreams I've had in the last week, they involve Labrador. I miss it.

I've been planning this for two years. Just discovered Phase III opened last December so hope to make the full trip.

Great photos. What camera were you using?

The lower-quality shots with the 4:3 aspect ratio are from a Canon SD400 ultracompact point&shoot.

The higher-quality shots with the 3:2 aspect ratio are from a Canon Digital Rebel XTi with a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 lens.

Now that Phase III is open and plans are to have Phase I fully paved by 2015, I'm riding the Trans-Lab again this coming September. Stay tuned...

Addendum: more pics.

It's taken me a while to get around to it, but I thought I'd add a bunch of Dan's pics (there may also be a few by Keith or James thrown in).

Keith and Dan heading out.

Loading the Jeep in Derby, VT, where Dan and Keith met up with James and me.

James and me.

James and me on the ferry across the mouth of the Saguenay fjord.

Me, just finished cooking scrambled eggs. Tadoussac.

James, Keith, and me, somewhere between Tadoussac and Baie-Comeau.

The Jeep cockpit.

Second morning of the trip, heading along the St. Lawrence from Tadoussac to Baie-Comeau, it was already chilly enough to convince me to stop and get out the heated vest... which required attaching the power lead to the battery.

Need. Coffee. Now. (Stopped for lunch somewhere between Manic 2 and Manic 5.)

Keith and me, Manic 5.

Our campsite behind Relais Gabriel.

Keith enjoying the view.

Dan in a really big tire, Fermont.

Emergency sat phone!

Remember me mentioning Peter, the guy who crashed on the Mini Trail section between Fire Lake and Fermont? Here's his bike afterwards when we met him in Labrador City.

Fixing Keith's flat front tire, somewhere between Lab City and Churchill Falls.

Tube installed, about to remount tire on rim.

Airing up the tire.

Our roadside campsite somewhere between Lab City and Churchill Falls.

James, Dan, and me eating breakfast in Churchill Falls.

James being a joker, Churchill Falls.

On the Trans-Lab, between Churchill Falls and Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

James, Keith, and me, making ourselves at home.

A picture of me taking a picture of the sunrise in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Jeff showing Keith, James, and me around his plane in HV-GB.

Would you let these gentlemen fly your plane?

Jeff and Miriam in HV-GB, shortly before we boarded the ferry.

James, Peter, and me on the ferry, trying to diagnose a carb problem on Peter's KLR.

James, Dan, and me on the ferry, with Mike in the background.

Miriam, James, and me eating dinner on the ferry.

That's me talking to Bill, shortly after disembarking the ferry in Cartwright. It was a damp morning.

James, Keith, and me at the junction of Phase II and Phase III.

Peter and Keith on the way from Cartwright to Red Bay.

Keith and Peter.

Peter.

A common sight on the Trans-Lab.

Yep, that's the Trans-Lab.

Bill, Peter, me, and I think that's Keith I'm talking to. This is right before the super-sketchy loose gravel/wind gust portion started, about 10 miles or so before Red Bay.

Trans-Lab completed, back to pavement in Red Bay. Left to right, Keith, Mike, Bill, me, Peter.

Dan and Mike outside our cabin in Newfoundland.

Somewhere in Newfoundland -- not sure where exactly.

When we stopped for lunch in Newfoundland, James just had to park on a rock.

Keith, Newfoundland.

Keith and James strapping Keith's pannier back onto the bike, Newfoundland.

The fishing boat we got our fresh cod from in Newfoundland.

Me, about to head onto the Cabot Trail.

James, Keith, and me having a working dinner in Cheticamp (had to make use of that free Wifi whenever we found it!).

Keith, touring the Glenora Distillery.

Keith and me waiting to cross the border back into the US.

Dan and Keith on the way home -- I'm guessing this is on the Maine coast.

*******

I'll be returning to the Trans-Lab this fall to ride the new Phase III section, with an entirely different group of riders, and this time I'm taking the Wee-Strom.

Meanwhile, Dan tells me that he and Keith are going to be riding through South America down to Tierra Del Fuego this September. Lucky them! Have a great trip, guys, and be sure to post a ride report!

Coming soon: Trans-Lab and Beyond II, the sequel.

Departing tomorrow morning for my second Trans-Lab run, this time including Phase III! It's an all-different crew this time though, with no support vehicle, so I'm not bringing the laptop and will therefore post the ride report (in a new thread) when I get back home.

Stay tuned...
