I love both years. My dealer today looked with me again at the rear sprocket bolts and indeed they are a different size to the 09's. larger nut with a longer bolt. No big deal but they are different sizes and the chain is different too, fact.

There are some chain Lubes that make your chain look white, mainly those containing Teflon.
From the picture i can't tell.

As I previously stated (above), my '09 was built in July, my wife's '10 was built in August. The VINs are 74 numbers apart.

Her bike and mine look identical, but for color.

BMW has a habit of doing incremental changes during a model year. If they aren't major (Sprocket bolts, chains, computer tweaks) they don't constitute a model change and they are incorporated during a model run. I suspect that what some of you are seeing are those types of changes. Now color is a major change and is a model year change

Pays your money and takes your chances!

Here in the states it is up to the Manufacturer along with some date restrictions.

The model year is designated in the 11th character of a US VIN

Here is a sight that explains the BMW VIN in the US -

The model year is designated by the 10th character (not 11th) in the US/Cnd VIN.

I had to choose between a new 2010 and a used 2009 (barely ~300 miles). I looked a lot at the 2010, but it was white and I really didn't like how the f800gs logo is in red. Personal preference, but it just doesn't look right to me. I looked through the technical data and brochure for the 09 (which I had for several months) versus the 2010 that just came out and couldn't find any appreciable difference. I had heard about the chain/sprocket bolts being different but could not find any documentation... I guess I didn't really care that much.

In the end it really came down to the fact that the 2009 was discounted roughly $1500 from the new price, they threw the 600 mile service in for free and gave me free labor to install a center stand and lojack. All told it was over a $2000 difference for me doing the 09 vs. 10 and I got the color I wanted all along (black and grey).

Being the end of the season (in New England anyways), I would recommend finding a leftover 09 (they do exist at GBM and Dunbar eurosports). But, if you want a specific color than go with the 2010... anything I've found so far doesn't seem to be that worthwhile given the cost savings you can probably find. I saw a pretty sweet 09 at MAX's on ebay for < $10K... sold quickly, but they do exist.

F800gs adventure

Is there any truth to a rumor of a 2010 F800gs Adventure version. Am I wasting my time on this?

Yes, you're wasting your time on this. For those who want an Adventure version, they have the 1200GSA.

The F800GS is the adventure version!!

By that I mean the F800GS is to the F650GS what the 1200GSA is to the 1200GS.
