Correct except you miss the cost analysis portion where the bean counters analyze the cost of repairing the old-style parts under warrranty versus the savings realized by utilizing the supply on hand first.

I hear a lot of people claiming there is such a thing as a 2008 F800GS. Simply not true. Your 2009 F800GS may have been manufatured in late 2008, but it sure as hell isn't a 2008 model year. No F800GS's were ever sold as 2008's. They may have been sold in late 2008 as a 2009. But there are no 2008 F800GS's. There are only 2009 and 2010 model year F800GS's in existence. Manufature date and Model Year are two separate things. When a dealer talks about a "2009 F800GS" they're talking about model year, not manufacture date. Was just buggin' me. Needed to clear that up. Sorry!

Warranty

It is my understanding that "put in service" means actually having the paperwork put in a buyers name. When car dealers sell cars used by factory executives, they carry a new warranty because they have never been titled. All demos I have looked into have carried the warranty from day of purchase. Maybe California is different?

Yes that is true, all the F800GS’ built prior to Aug ’08 that were sold in Europe and Africa (maybe also Australia?) would have been ’08 models, and there were quite of number of those. For the most part, only North-America is devoid of ’08 models; they were all manufactured after around July ’08. (there may have been a handful that went to NA that were manufactured in July ’08 but they would also have been designated 2009 models as well.)

Sorry guys but even in Europe the first F800GS's that were sold were marketed and sold as 2009 model year bikes, regardless of manufacture date. 2009 is the year BMW Motorrad officially released and sold the F800GS, and F650GS2 for that matter. There may have been some 2009 model year F800GS's sold in Europe in late 2008, but they're still 2009 model year bikes. I heard this straight from the horse's mouth. When I was going through my clutch failure ordeal I spoke with a woman very high up at BMWNA in NJ. When speaking about the problem with my bike I mistakenly called it a 2008. She was very quick to point out that there is no such thing as a model year 2008 F800GS. I replied to her by pointing out the manufacture date of 09/08 printed on my frame. She said, "that's when the bike was built in Germany, but it's an 09 model year. The first F800GS that rolled off the factory line for sale was intended to be an 09 model year bike. There's been a lot of confusion about this, even with dealers and press...."

I was under the impression that in the UK at least the model year was more determined by when the bike was put on the road rather than any mfg date or designation by the mfgr.

When I had the Tiger I read several posts from people waiting a couple of months to put the bike on the road to get a different model designation. And, I am talking the exact same bike, getting different designations based on the date it was put into service, not two different bikes.

Maybe someone from the UK can jump in here and explain their complex model/registration system.

Bought mine in the UK in May 2008 and I was by no means the first. It's a 2008 model. Registered in 2008. With a 2008 registration plate. How much more 2008 do you want?

Griz, what the woman at BMWNA told you is true for us here in the U.S. But in Europe they started taking delivery of these bikes back in March of '08. Those bikes, in spite of whatever the horse may have told you, were 2008 models.

Man, you’re some piece of work Griz!
You hear something somewhere and feverishly propagate it as though it had come directly from God himself!

Let me reword it for you,
These bikes started SELLING (as in leaving the dealerships) in Europe and parts of Africa on March 8th, 2008 to be exact as 2008 models!!!
(Notice all the 8’s? There was a huge marketing campaign surrounding this new bike: New 2008 model, 800cc, available on March 8th, 2008)

The same wasn’t true here in North-America however. They didn’t start to get here until late August 2008 (July-Aug build dates), but ALL as 2009 models.

There are 2008 MY F800GS motorcycle in Europe. There are no 2008 MY F800GS motorcycles outside of Europe as the introduction into these countries was pushed until later in 2008 in essence 'relabeled' as a 2009 motorcycle.

Demand was that high during the initial half year run of the motorcycle. There were no changes between 2008 and 2009. There were various recalls during 2009 that were incorporated in 2009 production runs, and logically carried over into 2010 runs. Other, small changes were made such as the paint color, 'pee up' being updated, and various fasteners being addressed as product development requested.

I had not heard anything about the spring rate changing. I'll test ride a '10 model on Friday and let you know what I think.
