fat bars on r100 gs

just doing a bit of prep work for my up coming gs project ,want to put fat bars on the bike when i get it ,as the standard bars are horrible,any one done this ,and have any pics ,yes ive tried the search button ,without succsess.

I've done it. One of the issues you will have is finding the right rise in after market bars.The other is filing the left bar knurls down sufficiently to allow the left switch block to slide on. The switch blocks are cast, & will break if you try to spread them.

I understand that one of the Magura bars works, but I couldn't find any resellers stocking them.

I used Rox Risers to get the rise & fat clamps. Initially used Protaper Rapter ATV bars. These didn't quite have the 'look' I was after, though. If I was to do this again, I'd get slightly higher Rox Risers, & flatter bars.

I moved to the flatter bars after I did a KYB fork conversion, which raised the triple clamp. I used the flatter Sunline AV O/S CR bend bars. I find those a little straight, but like fact those have a cross bar.

Are we talking fat-bars as in "thicker tube wall", or as in "larger outside diameter".... 22mm and 7/8 are pretty inter-changeable, but go to 1" or 1-1/4".... and.... .... big diff in the problems you face!

Fat Bars need different clamps, but taper down to standard 7/8th at the bar ends. So the issue is getting a modified clamp (there are plenty of options out there - dirt bike riders change these all the time), & getting the rise & sweep right.

most of the trail /adventure bikes ive had ,ive changed to fat bars ,as in the make and size of the bar ,never measured the diameter,just used the brand fat bars.
i hate the allmost straight ends to the gs bars ,ive allways used dakar bend on mine ,and i dont like the look of the gs bars as well..

Mine were steel & rusty, & bent.

Given I was going to modify the bike, & ride single track & 4wd track, there was a good chance I would tip over. The fat bars give me confidence the bars won't end up bent or broken. Worked for me. I barrel rolled the bike off a bank 26th Nov, broke some ribs & punctured a lung. The bike landed upside down from about 1 to 1 & 1/2 meters up the bank. The bars rotated in the risers, but are still straight.

Another (strong alloy) alternative was the twin wall 7/8th Renthal bars. A friend runs those on his GS.

Just a word of warning, the BMW bars are a metric width, that is slightly smaller thans 7/8". This means that if you go with 7/8" bars, depending on brand/material, you will need to make the ends slightly smaller. If you don't you risk breaking your control housings when installing which is easy to do and expensive to fix.

The control housings are brittle, so you should use caution even if you get the right width bars (like from another BMW model) when removing or installing

Renthal Fatbars here & there is

a great adapter for 39 on Ebay. I can get you the manufacturer, fit on perfect and are big fat beefy adapters so it looks good and beefy not thin and weak.

HE IS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, I broke my left control clamp. You just need to grind her down a bit to remove the gnarling on the metal.

Got my Renthals used on Ebay 21 bucks delivered, they pop up all the time.

Years ago I mounted some Magura AX-line high handlebars on my G/S without any fitment issues at all. Just needed some adapter clamps to fit the fat bars. The clamps are found in many variants and I got mine from a local moto-cross dealer.

If you google Magura AX-line high you will find some information saying that they have the same profile as the BMW bars used on the R1100GS/1150GS. I think that their high profile combined with added height of the adapter clamps suit my riding ergonomics, especially when standing on the pegs when going offroad.
