Who wants corn ?
The weather this past Sunday was gorgeous in this part o' the woods so I decided to go out for a ride. Got my tank bag, geared up and headed toward and trough Carlisle, taking route 34 to Gettysburg. Nice n' relaxing ride not too much traffic, nothing extraordinary. Once in Gettysburg I noticed more people were out than usual and tour buses were all over the place so I decided to slowly head back. Once I got back to Carlisle I made a detour around rt 11, trough some local roads. Not a big deal, less traffic and it also has some nice twisties here and there.
Twisties, gravel and cornfields. Cornfields on the both side of the road. I ran this road many times before but this time, it took me. It was not a complicated turn and I was taking my time going into it. While leaned over I found some fine gravel that was happy to send me into a slow-motion lowside. "Well then, isn't this just dandy ?" I thought to myself while proceeding to mow down some corn stalks that happen to be on the side of the road. No, it was more like "oh, fucking shit... fucking dammit. Oh shit, shit shit....Then, everything went silent. Sky looks very beautiful. Holy fuck, why is everything quiet ???? After a second or two, I sat up. Fuck a duck. Don't get up. Wiggle your toes. OK. Took my gloves off and felt around my helmet. Nothing. Good. Take a slow, deep breath and get up. OK, everything cool. Then I flip my helmet up, take my glasses off, intact..cool. Took the helmet off and looked it over. Other than some scratches on the face shield, grass and dirt all over it, it came out good. Next, check the jacket. I had my Gericke Venom mesh on that day....Shit. That's the only jacket I have. Anyways, other than some serious dirt and grass all over it, it came out good as well. No rips, cuts or tears. Sweet. Jeans OK. Boots OK. Then, as soon as I started looking around, an older couple comes up in their van. Until then I did not see any other vehicles around. Husband comes over, asks am I OK. Yes, but I will need some help with the bike. We noticed fuel coming out so we slowly picked it up and parked it on the side of the road. Then, the nice gentleman informed me he doesn't see any blood coming out from my head and he asked me about 5 times if Im sure Im OK. I assured him, in a calm manner that Im fine. We shook hands, I said my deepest thanks and he left. His wife was still looking at me like I was the living dead. I waved and said thanks again. After they left, I looked around. Realized that I never touched the road surface and was lucky enough to touch down in the dirt. Corn stalks broke my fall. Bike did catch a small-ish rock under one header as it went down. Headlight gone, one turnsignal lens and bulb gone, forks tweaked a tad, gauge cluster bent. Bucket full of grass between the motor and the frame. I let it sit for few minutes and checked it over carefully before trying to start it up. Took about 3 tries and it came on. Heh, cool. I let it idle for a minute and nothing changed. In the meantime, I took my headlight off, swept the lens shards from the road and got my gear back on. Before I got on the bike, I looked around and picked out a healthy corn cob and packed it in the bag along with the headlight carcass. *After the nice people in a minivan left, loads of bikers went by over the course of time and each one of them stopped and asked if I need help. There was a dood on, I think F650 (don't quote me on that but it was a bmw), few Harleys and Hondas. That, I really liked and made me feel good inside. These people I've never seen, met or talked to before stopped by to offer help. |

Glad you are OK. That happens so easily.
BTW, place the ear with all the skins in the light barbeque coals, on the side, turn regularly until the skins are dry. Open, butter it and ENJOY! |

Hey, Loki, glad you're okay. I had a somewhat similar 'get-off' about three weeks ago. Going downhill, not gentle but not terribly steep, gravel fire-road, unbanked turn to the left, I got over into soft dirt and gravel on the right-hand side of the road and started to 'look' my way into the turn when damn if the bike didn't feel like it was on a track or in a rut moving in a straight line for the woods rather than turning to the left. What I did wrong, just about everything in retrospect, was that I took my eye off of my destination and began looking at where I didn't want to go, the ground and the woods, and I shut down the throttle and grabbed a big handful of front brake, and probably stomped on the rear one as well. Bang, I was down. Not a lot of damage to either bike or body, some scratches on both and a sore knee and ankle, but no major harm done, other than to my ego and self-confidence. I believe that if I'd had the presence of mind to continue to look at my desired line and give it more throttle the bike would have pulled itself around the corner. I do believe that on dirt the old saying "when in doubt, gas it!" is very true.
Glad to hear you're okay and hope that fixing the bike isn't too costly.

Glad to hear that you're alright. Shame about your CX, hope you'll fix it up. I had a similar crash a month ago. My GS ended up with a scratched valve cover and no other damage. I got a spiral fracture out of it. Looks like I am not that good at crashing a bike.
