i think you should be able to search exhaust threads relating to the Supertrapp and find detailed pics of the airbox for me - if not PM me and I will email ya some photos. Previous owner did it - seems to work well even in water crossings.

If you choose to get sprayed as I did, your RhinoLiner dealer should be able to color match anything - that is what they did for me.

Solution to a problem that doesn't exist?

Okay, ya'll can flame me at will, but I've just gotta ask... All this effort to protect your pretty factory finish by covering it up just escapes me. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? If it's to protect the beautiful factory paint and graphics from a few scratches then why are you covering it up with protective materials?? Why not just wait until you do actually scratch it up, and then cover up the damage. But to do it beforehand just bewilders me. And how many people have actually damaged or broken off the petcock? I'll stick my neck out and guess that none of us have ever done so. As has already been demonstrated, the ADV tank is extremely durable, any crash will more likely result in a damaged subframe behind the tank. Personally I like the scratches on my tank, they're battle scars showing I actually ride the thing.. Maybe you just need an entire cage around your bike to protect you from any and all obstacles, yeah it's called a car. Ha! Flame away, but I'm really just playing devil's advocate.

ok nOOb, here is your update - the people on this discussion are all damaged good for the most part, we have ground thru the paint, ground into the nylon, and some have ground thru to fuel... we know the tank is tough as your thick skull but we want bulletproof. we wanna be able to crash and just worry about our flesh and bones.

plus at the end of the day it would be nice to have a bike that retains some protion of its initial value - just in case you have to liquify it

so go backwards, read up, and try and think outside your box.

I'm not buyin' it. And really you don't need to defend your actions on my behalf, I was just having some fun.

Personally, I would wait until I was ready to sell the bike (or the part, whichever is the case), and THEN spend the money and effort to make it look pretty. But don't try to convince me that some vinyl sticker or spray-on bedliner or even a thin sheet of carbon fiber is really going to make a significant difference in a severe impact. Yeah, it might help in an abrasion such as sliding on a rough surface but that's about it. And if that were to happen, then since you're so worried about appearances aren't you going to have to replace your "protection" again??

To each his own. Now that I've made my case, I'll probably end up crashing and ruining my tank next time out...after I finally get my tranny rebuilt

You have a good point, DB. Others have their reasons, too. Remember, beauty is in the eye...

The Japanese petcock protector thingy looks like something I might try to fab up, not for carbonio flash, but to hinder having the petcock ripped off. That is all I really fear. I have never been a fan of crashbars, and these bikes weigh too much already!

I also agree with db in some ways, but the bottom line for a lot of us is that we enjoy modding our bikes

Perhaps I will find that spraying rubber stuff all over my tank and plastics was stupid... If so, then I won't do it again, who cares?

In this vein, how many mods do we make that are absolutely, positively, functional and in no way made just to itch our fetish with these things I mean, I in no way have the skillz or any other true use for a pipe and FCR which increases my hp...

FWIW - I've got "before & after" crash-testing experience with the Line-X stuff & it does make a difference.

DB's right in that it's kind of silly to protecte the paint from "scratches" ... by covering the paint. But the coating is THICK (main disadvantage: weight). It does offer a degree of impact resistance. Probably fair to compare it to the thin foam hip pads that come in MX pants. I can't wear regular kneepads when competing in trials events (won't fit with the trials boots), so I sewed the MX hip pad material into the knees of the riding pants - that thin layer of foam makes a BIG difference in minor/medium crashes.

Line-X stuff seems to do the same. Plus, after my last run-in with a tree, the tank didn't look any different afterward - just hose off the bark stain. Instead of thinking of it as covering the paint, it's an entirely new scratch-proof paint job.

Oh geez, I guess I was having fun at other people's expense. My apologies. Honestly, I was just trying to offer an alternative viewpoint. Maybe I'm PMSing?

I get off on modding my bike as much as the next guy. You should see the plywood rack I put on my bike last summer, it was a beaut ! Nobody will blame me for having good taste, just ask dOgwatEr

I'll shut up and go back to the corner now. Carry on.

Nah, no worries, mang. Just trying to stave off a pointless to & fro.

As for getting off on fiddling with our bikes, speaking for myself, it amounts to more than half the motorcycling equation. Gotta get 'em all just the way I like 'em, from fuel mixture to widgets ... and then I leave 'em dirty as hell pretty much all the time.

no need to sulk away dirtyboy (or is it girl?) - if you had read the thread, and other discussion all us'all been havin' you would understand that for the most part we are not interested in cosmetics.

There was nobody discussing a "thin layer of CF", the vein was about 6 layers of CF and Kevlar for tank guards that the 950 fellers say is bombproof. And no, I wouldn't change it after scratchin it... because you are just gonna scratch it again. The point was to make the impact points of the tank as sturdy as the rest of the bike seems to be
