I can't even remember the last time I saw an attractive exhaust on a Japanese bike.

VFR1200, Z1000, ZX10, CBR1000, all of which couldn't be any uglier if they put a team of engineers on it and had a contest.

Most of the funky whale dick exhausts on Japanese bikes have to do with strict Euro emissions rules and all the crap they have to stuff in a can nowadays no?

Something Motus isn't exactly worried about.
Is there emissions rules for an OEM DOT number, or is it strictly noise on a bike?

Large exhausts, maybe. Ugly, over stylized exhausts, no. All manufacturers have to meet the same requirements, yet not all manufacturers try to make the mufflers a design element to the extent that many of the Japanese bikes are these days. All the swoopy lines and weird angles just look WRONG to me. They're just over-done. Just give me a simple round or oval can or two and call it a day.

And, yes, Motus has to meet the same requirements as anyone else if they want to sell in the global marketplace.

US bikes have to have catalytic converters. Even a 90MPG scooter has to have one
There are also noise restrictions that have to be met.

Except MOTUS isn't selling in the global marketplace, only the US.

Is that a 50 state reg? I don't think I've ever heard of anywhere in N.America where you had to have a bike emission tested?

Edit -- Meh I just looked it up myself, it looks like "big" manu's have had to meet stricter EPA emissions starting in 2010...but "small" volume builders are mostly exempt. I am guessing MOTUS is classified as a "small" builder.

Will catalytic converters be required on all highway
motorcycles?

Motorcycles are unique vehicles, and the application of some passenger
car technologies will raise unique issues when applied to motorcycles.
These issues may be more critical with some makes, models, or styles
than with others. About twenty percent of the 2002 and 2003 motorcycles certified by manufacturers to emission standards already incorporate catalytic converters. We project that this will increase to about 50
percent when the second Tier of standards takes effect in 2010. Our
Regulatory Impact Analysis contains a detailed discussion of the technologies expected to be used to meet the proposed standards. At this
time small volume manufacturers are required only to meet the Tier 1
standard, which is achievable without the use of catalytic converters.
The Tier 1 standard for small manufacturers takes effect in the 2008
model year.

It's a Federal reg. Regardless of whether or not a state requires emission testing. To be sold in the US the bike still has to meet Federal EPA requirements. Look at Harley for example. It comes 50 state legal even though my state doesn't require bikes to be tested. But, yes, there are some states that do require testing for bikes as well.

Do you think that Motus will be successful only selling here in the states? Do you think they don't have plans to get the required certification and sell abroad at some point?

Many bikes have had cats for a long time. That doesn't mean they have to make the exhaust ugly. My BMW came with a cat, but the muffler looks like a normal muffler, not some stylized swoopy thing from Buck Roger's bike. Harley seems to meet international requirements, with cats, and still not make their exhaust look weird.

I'm not complaining about the components, or the sound, or even the size. I'm just talking about how so many of the new Japanese bikes are coming with weird looking exhaust like this.

or,

As just a couple of examples.

Maybe some people like that, idk...

Nope, no one does. Join the forums of any of these bikes & there will be a dedicated exhaust thread just because that is THE first mod that people do to their bikes. Why cant manufacturers just stick with a simple round cylinder exhaust? It is a LOT more tolerable than said whale dick. Of course, further blasphemy is when they stick TWO of those whale dicks on your shiny new bike.

All those wacky looking pipes are ugly. Hopefully it is just a passing fad. But since they are mostly on sport bikes they don't really bother me that much.

As of right not, there is nowhere in the U.S. that requires motorcycles to be emissions tested. One county, Maricopa county, AZ, (where I live) was the ONLY county in the U.S. that required motorcycle emissions testing, and that finally ended on 6-21-13. I was able to get a couple of bikes going and registered that had been sitting for years in my shed when that damn test went away. One of them smokes. I don't care. It runs good.

Nobody leaves the stock exhausts on sportbikes or cruisers anyway. Up until now I have always kept the stock exhaust. But now if I were to buy a new bike with a cat con, I would have to get an aftermarket exhaust. No emissions crap for me.

I think for the target audience - meaning guys who ride sport-TOURING bikes...... Anything more than throaty is too much...that's why triumph spent so much effort on the INTAKE sound - the character comes from the intake roar.

Anyhow...I am going to go pop a beer open and read that post about the jap exhausts looking like whale dicks again.....

Depending on who's comment you're talking about one person said it reminded him of a "Chevelle" not a chevette.
