Willits, Ca. Riders questions about local roads

I am planning a dual sport ride up in your area. Not an organized ride, just me and one other rider and wanted to ask about some of your local roads. I am trying to put together a route from Covelo to Willits off the main roads (162). I have made a route on BaseCamp but have never ridden this route. Didn't want to go ride it and piss off the locals. Any help would be appreciated. I can provide road names if someone would like to help.

Thanks
LaPorte

Covelo to Willits... lots of er... 'private land' in that area. (i.e. growers)
Can feed a road name or two and I can look at it.

If you have BaseCamp I can send the tracks? Then you can see exactly what I am planning. The i.e. growers is what I am concerned about along with locked gates and water crossings! The Garmin Topo map, in some places, only shows Unpaved Road, no name. Then there is the water crossing, I would assume its a bridge but you never know looking at the Garmin Topo. Middle Fork of the Eel River. I was planning on doing some exploring when the weather gets better, but if its off limits due to private property then I won't bother.

Thanks

We went up there earlier this summer.

You could check Poon Kinney as one back road. It was pretty fun. Also, if you're already in Covelo, hop onto FH7.

Looked at the proposed route from Covelo to Willits in Google earth.
There are no crossings of the main fork of the Eel between 162 (on the way into Covelo) and the crossing on the east end of the Covelo valley (FH7).

There is a road, the 'Hearst-Willits' that ends up well to the north in that country... ends up on the Eden Valley ranch, near a mile-long privately held airstrip.

I am planning on going up when the weather gets a little better and do a little exploring and see what I find. I have a starting route out from Willits North/West to HWY 1 and a Return route from Covelo South/West to Willits. The rest of the proposed route I have is mostly what I have done before. Wanted to start and end in Willits instead of Garberville. Stayed in Garberville at the beginning of Nov this year and the town was full of field workers and I am not talking Lettuce Pickers. Maybe Willits will be a little cleaner!

Once the first significant snow falls, FH7 raceway is usually not cleared until mid May.

That's it. I'm going into hibernation. Hmmph.

But seriously, do love FH7 sooo much. :)

>"Maybe Willits will be a little cleaner!"

Willits now has a couple 'bigger' motel chains... they are probably just fine.

This summer we had some cartel bosses come in and sit in the cafe (G'ville).
Most of the Mexicans cleared out very quickly. Only people left in there
were the 'white' people and the cartel bosses.

Interesting stuff. The cartel bosses spoke impeccable spanish and english.

It wasn't Mexicans I was referring too, it was our young white folks who do not worry about anything, but getting Hi.

Tony, I have a 2 day loop that starts in Ukiah then to Willits, Fort Bragg, Covelo, etc. Still a lot of pavement but once you get over by the coast seems everything is paved or closed, still a fun ride. Check your email. Bob

IMHO: Thank god for the USFS and BLM.
Some of the policies may be hosed... but better than no riding.
