Day One (6/24/09)

One the way to Bear Mountain

Q, I think you are off on your day one mileage. I remember getting off the motorbike in Harrisburg and saying "Don't you EVER make me ride 340 miles in one day on a dang dirtbike." Gosh, now it seems an average day but the first day? It was dreadful.

Dang. Was I still singing that "too many miles" tune by the time we got to your place? I *did* get used to it, and at the end of the trip I thought 200 mile days on a dirtbike were "easy". I guess we met you Day 4 or so...

BTW, your Sea Foam did the trick for my engine woes, at least for a few days, but then my bike started getting poopy again. But alas, I am getting ahead of the story...

[South America trip planning is going well. Got my travel shots yesterday. Still dorking around with what bike to ride 1 month before the trip, but that's typical "me".]

Sharpsburg. Peaceful for a former battlefield. My thanks go out to all that serve: past or present.

Day 3: June 26th 2009

We awoke after 13 hours of sleep. I guess we were really tired.
But then again we were not used to spending 8+ hours a day riding single cylinder dirt bikes.

It took us an hour and a half to break down camp, but then we headed to Churchville VA to get some breakfast.

We found T-bow and Tooters restauraunt, were we were able to park the bikes on the sidewalk in front, and have a nice meal on the front porch.

The food was good and plentiful.

And, yes, in true ADVrider fashion I did take a lot of food pics.
We met the owner, who is an Iraq War vet, and avid hunter and he showed off the interior of his fine establishment.
The rest rooms...

As well as some of the vicious "Wolf Deer" he had shot.

After breakfast we follwed the GPS along scenic back roads toward our ADV Tent Space destination that evening in Tazewell.

A mid day siesta was required as it was getting to be hot and humid again.

That afternoon we took Rt 24 south and it was nice.

Then over the mountain pass to Tazewell VA.

We loved the novelty of dirt roads and enjoyed the twisties.
It was near here that I saw a Black Bear and her two cubs as I came around a corner. That was cool to see.

After stopping to pick up a few cold beers we made it to Jockalocka's place and set up camp.

Dinner was another version of Glorp.

But later as the beer and whisky started to flow we all had a great evening telling stories and tall tales.
Heres Josh and his brother in true ADV fashion.

He asked me to sign his bike, so I did.

Chilling, watching the fire...

Yeup, life can be good at times...

Stats for the day:
228 miles.
Moving average 38.5. Moving time 5:55.
Stopped 4:37. Total 10:28.

Day 4: June 27th, 2009

We departed Jockalock's place early in the morning and the weather was threatening to rain. A few miles down the road the rain did come, so we pulled over and put on our rain gear.

About an hour later we stopped for breakfast. It was absolutely HUGE.

Today we were headed to Saphire NC to visit with Motoadventuregal's Mom. To get there we took a few mountain roads and rode down some quiet valleys.

Even though it was a Saturday, most of the roads we chose were deserted.

Even the nice twisty ones.

From prior experience, I knew that Motoadventuregal's Mom lived in a dry county, so we stopped to get "supplies" for the two day visit.

Eventualy we made it to her Mom's.

So far the trip had been easy...

Stats for the day:
257 miles.
Moving average 39.3 Moving time 6:33
Stopped 3:30 Total 10:03

I MISSED THE BEARS! It would have been a highlight of the trip, but I was behind Questor and didn't see them as they ran off into the forest.

But once we descended out of the forest, we were treated to this spectacular view:
