Question Obvious Question for F800GS pilots

Have you guys co-opted a "Must-Do Fixes & Mods" thread for F800GS? I'd like to see a straight list that has been argued, debated, thrashed, resolved.

And, I think I saw a consensus in one of the threads to wit that there are no "fixes" of big consequence in the 2010 model vs. earlier. If wrong, lemme know

In no particular order:

New screen if you're touring

Change the seat if you'll be doing big miles

Raise the handlebars

Beef up the suspension if you're doing heavy off-road

Add luggage

Add decent crash protection like Adventure-Spec or Givi

Hand guards too

Put some decent rubber on it

and Ride Ride Ride!

Improve F800

But other than that it's great.

Excellent list, but it doesn't address low RPM stall, excessive vibes, disintegrating bearings.... etc....

I believe he was directing his question at those who actually own and have real life experience with the F800GS, not those who are parrotting anecdotal information that they have read in forums regarding the experiences of a very small number of owners.

So far in the six months I've had mine, there have been no fixes required. nearly 8000 kms and nothing has failed or broken. I have added many accessories to improve the bike to suit me and my riding style. Most of which were noted above by Wildman. I don't consider any of those items as fixes, but more as personalisation. Some of the mods he listed were not required for me. I'm happy with the suspension as is and will wait to upgrade it when its tired and needs freshening anyway. I also have no need for bar risers due to having an above average reach. In the end, what you need or want to change depends on how you are going to use the bike and what you expect of it.

well, to be fair, the reports I was thinking of are right here, in this folder, from conscientious people, not rumour-mongers.
But, to your point, if such shortcomings are random events displaying no trend or a big enough sample to matter, then that too is newsworthy.

The results here: http://f800riders.org/forum/showthread.php?t=31853
suggest exactly that: though there are problems, they are not numerous, and if you add the 'happy' and 'very happy' it comes to a whopping 95%!

any idea how many inmates here on ADV now own F800GS or F650-twin?

Sell your 3 suzukis an dget an F800GS... you know you want one, I know you won't regret it. This is the best bike ever!

On the mods: I'll switch the stock can for a carbon fiber exhaust. Looking for something that will work cooler and cool off faster

Options on Bike at Purchase

Heated Grips
ABS
On Board Computer
Alarm System
Clear T.S. lenses
Center Stand
Low Seat

Added

Givi Adapter
Givi V46
Cortech Mini Tank bag
Rizoma Brake Fluid Reservior
Adventure Spec Crash Bars
Adventure Spec Bash Plate
Rivco Highway Iso-Pegs
Ram Ball Mount (for GPS)
BarkBusters
PowerBronze Rear Hugger

The things I have added are pretty much my standard list that I add to every bike. I consider these things just part of the purchase price. After my recent 1600 mile trip to Arkansas I will be adding an after market seat, either Corbin or Rick Meyer.

I havc had the Tank replaced under warranty and had front axle warranty work done.

Other than that I have had no problems with the bike. See this post where I addressed some of the issues that have been mentioned on this forum.

There's one thing we can always rely on when we discuss any point about the F8.

A never ending supply of WeeStrom owners ready to tell the world what a heap of shit the Beemer is.

I don't visit threads on Stroms, so can anyone tell me, are there BMW owners trolling around there telling anyone who will listen that all Stroms burn oil?

Just askin'

This is their attempt to assimilate the unbelievers into the collective -

If more of them looked like 7 of 9 they might win me over -

This is a great response BW - and the original post on your Arkansas trip is a good ref point for anyone to review.

I may have missed it, but was the tank r/r due to a notice BMW sent out or random exceptional problem?

I noticed cracks in the outer shell of the Tank and pointed them out to my dealer who then went to BMW with photos and it was replaced within two weeks.
