Sucks about the dent.
It looks like this could happen with whatever brand rack you get, though.

Thx for checking your clearance.
I am going to try to lower my exhaust a bit.

Any way to return them? Maybe the middle arm was welded slightly wrong?
I spoke to roger at caribou cases and he said that there is some variance in the bmw exhaust.
Mine be just be slightly higher than yours.

They are build by Lafranconi in Italy, so Roger might very well be right!

You are lucky if you can get by with spacers.. I had to drill, heat and bend. then when i mentioned the difficulty on a buell forum big brother at Buell HQ red tagged my bike and voided the entire warranty. The dealership went to bat right away and got it fixed. Makes you wonder.

good luck.

Easy enough fix with the washers behind the stoppers, nice idea.

Another problemo I'm having is the rack slightly touches the muffler...maybe by a hair.... Is this normal? Is this ok? I checked the spacer and I'm pretty sure I installed things correctly....
Thx
Mine did exactly this, only there wasn't even a hair's breadth between them. After much unsuccessful farkling, I junked them and swapped to SW Motech racks which fit much better and are a demonstrably superior finish and fit to the H&Bs.

Which is a shame, because I like H&B stuff - I have their engine guards on both my bikes and their pannier frames on my Strom, plus their Junior panniers are excellent, extremely robust, vastly underrated ADV panniers.

i wish i had switched to SW motech racks.
i'm probably stuck with the hb racks.
the pelican cases look better than the aluminum cases, imho.
hopefully the rack won't fail in any off road drops....
The H&Bs are very tough. I stuck with them for a year. But in the end I didn't want to end up with a muffler dent, so I sucked up the $300-odd and changed, then sold off my used H&Bs for $100.

In the mean time, like you said, you have luggage - go camping, go for a ride, worry about it later!

is there some type of foam that you can put around the HB rack?
the foam may absorb some of the impact to the muffler.
it has to be heat-resistant, too.....
maybe i'm being optimistic.

Banshee and I have the sw motec/ trax racks with trax boxes. Nice idea it has it's flaws. We will live with them. The trax rack Has the option of removing 90% of the rack in about 30 seconds. The down side is the quick connect gouges slightly into the body panel over time or if ever so gingerly tweaked. The quick fix is to find a piece of plastic to act as a chafe guard. Only using bags for 80/20 road trips. Soft bags for dirt.

Good luck , live well, happy riding.

Replace those QD fasteners with plain ol' bolts for longer trips. Saves them coming undone on corrugated roads.
