Thanks for the heads-up -- ordered a set as well as some shims, mirror extenders, and new grips. Nice little project for me when they all arrive.

Model year visual cues?

Hey guys. I've been bitten by the W650 bug. Looks like I am about 10 years late! Finding these things in unmolested condition is not so easy! Sad to see these things get turned in to hard tails (whats the point, ridiculous) or otherwise chopped. Bolt on cafe stuff can be cool though.

Right now I have a DL1K, Sv650S, DR650, and cheap KDX pinger. I really don't have a nice relaxed bike just to cruise the straight Iowa roads on. When I say cruiser, my interests are more of the W650/V11 Sport/Bonnie kind. I could never see myself on a dime-a-dozen forward control cruiser. As far as looks and simplicity, the W is at the top of my list!

Anyway, I've been scouring craigslist and there aren't really any nice example close to me (central Iowa). That may mean a fly and ride next spring if I find something. What concerns me a little bit is that I understand there were some significant improvements to the 2001MY bikes. Has anyone ridden both? Are the changes noticeable? Also, how can I tell the difference in the years? I thought the 2001 came with a pleated seat. However, I have seen a couple craigslist ads claiming a 2001, but the seat was smooth. Either I am mistaken, or these guys don't know what they have??

If anyone gets a line on a 2001 within a couple hundred miles of Iowa, let me know!

I've had both the 2000 and 2001 W650s and currently own a 2001 which I found last year in NC with only 2500 miles and just about unmolested except for smaller turn signals and tank badges removed and lost. Like you said, it's hard to find a nice one.

The 2001 did come with a pleated seat. A lot of stock seats have been changed. Neither stock seat is great for longer rides, maybe the 2001 is a little better..
From Motors

My 2001 W650.

The 2001 had a larger front axle, a different angle on the gauges to improve visibility (I guess) , a little better seat, revised steering geometry. redesigned tank pads, and a few other minor changes.

If I was looking for a W650, I would consider the condition more than the year. I can't tell the difference when riding.

2000 blue/silver
2001 green/cream

Thanks for the perspective Barnone.

Anyone recognize the pipes on this one. It looks fairly nice, and as far as I know the dude still has it. Kind of a strange ad, but whatever.

$4500 seems a bit steep considering a private sale and not stock, but the mods look nice.

Actually it is the Cheoah Dam. (aka Fugitive Dam).
Thanks for the PS but I prefer the clean look without the badges. Always took them off my other W650s.

Certainly not a mint 2000 W650. None stock mufflers, handlebars, tail light, mirrors, and missing turn signals?

I'd say $4k...maybe $4200 because of it not being stock. Considering the distance, it would be hard to negotiate the price. If it was completely stock, I could see it go for $4500 or more.

Thanks for the opinion. That is exactly what I was thinking. One can only ask for a "collectors" premium if the bike is totally stock or at least has all the stock parts with it. Looking all over now, I see that many are asking 5K or greater though. Even in the mid 6's, which is what they cost new...nuts. And this is suppose to be the slow time of the year for selling bikes!

Quite honestly, I am looking for a bike to ride vs collect. If I can't pick up a nice W for 4K I will probably look elsewhere. The pre-08 Bonnies have decent proportions with their smaller tanks. The kink in the exhaust is just a huge visual drawback. Even that look like it can be mitigated though. I've seen nice '07 T100's in the 5k range.

Prices on ones I've seen on craigslist or ebay are a little nutty, but they're still out there for sale - so folks are willing to wait for someone to bite.

I got this for $3800 this last weekend. ($3700 plus $100 for the new tire he put on)
14,800 miles - new tires, battery...

It was a nice day for a ride here today - almost 70 degrees. Took a couple of the bikes out for some excercise, including the W. I forgot my camera -- sorry for the crappy cell-phone pic.

Love the black and red, is it custom? I haven't seen that color scheme before.

FYI, if anyone runs across this, don't bother. The guy is asking $8500 for it. Sounds like he believes that it was an investment. Only 2000 ever built! I'm sure the folks across the pond where these were sold for many years have to snicker at that a bit!

Thanks. My particular tank is custom, but that color combination was offered in Canada for '01.
