At the left side of the bike, at a lower position than the oil inspection window, there is a rubber hose going into a triangular shaped thing, which is fastened to the engine case with a few bolts. There's oil sweating/leaking there into my bashplate. What is that thing anyway? I can't seem to find it in the parts manual? Do I tighten the bolts? Is there a seal which can be replaced?
Please help a noob out here... |

Off the cuff, I'd suspect a cracked engine case near one of the bolts that holds the side stand on. Very common problem. Pull your (stock?) skidplate, get a flashlight and some braxke cleaner. You will probably see the crack at the base of the little circular build out that is threaded to hold a kickstand bolt. Hope it's just a loose screw and not the aforementioned.

Oil screen cover?
There is a diamond shaped cover held in place by 2 bolts. The large line contains a check valve for oil flow and there is a screen inside the motor that is supposed to cleaned at an oil change. The HOW oil change thread has some photos part way down of an ADV showing that piece. Here's the url:

It's not a cracked engine case, that's for sure! You almost created some paranoia there Unaweep
Thanks for the info guys, at least now I know what these parts are and I guess it's very common that oil can get past the diamond shaped plate. I'm going to inspect those bolts one of these days. |
