Buell is History

By Steve Gelsi

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Harley-Davidson Inc. said Thursday its third-quarter net income dropped 84% to $26.48 million, or 11 cents a share, from $166.54 million, or 71 cents a share in the year-ago period. The Milwaukee-based motorcycle manufacturer was expected to earn 23 cents a share, according to a survey by FactSet Research. Harley's latest quarter included a one-time fixed-asset impairment charge of $14.2 million related to Buell and a goodwill impairment charge of $18.9 million related to MV Agusta. Looking ahead, the company will discontinue production of Buell motorcycles, resulting in the loss of 180 jobs over time. It'll book one-time charges of $215 million to $245 million in 2009 and 2010, about $55 million ahead of its July projections. The company expects to ship 35,000 to 40,000 motorcycles in the fourth quarter.

Perhaps that's why Buell's new marketing campaign emphasizes sport and performance. It would make sense if they anticipated trying to continue on without a connection to Harley. Different engines, attracting new investors.......

Now where will I get turn signals for my V-Strom?

I predict that somehow, somewhere, the brand will continue.

I also predict that there will be at least a dozen new threads started in the next day or two about this. I see a mergefest coming.

I loved my Buell S3T more than any other bike I've ever owned. It wasn't refined or classy but it was fun, really fun. It felt a little edgy and dangerous, but never out of control or unpredictable. It sounded like a bomb going off everytime you hit the throttle and it made your spirt soar sky high as it made you grab on to bars in order to handle the rage of horsepower and torque.

I'm a little choked up right now as I just got done watching Erik's video and I think of the good people, some of whom are friends, who work in East Troy. It's going to be a lean Christmas for a lot of them.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Erik on a few occasions, we always ended up talking guitars, another shared passion we shared. He's a normal guy with a serious love of high performance motorcycles and a hard nosed mid-western work ethic. He made more inovations than most other engineers/designers can dream of and did it in a fairly mature industry that is based more on evolution than revolution.

God Bless all the good people at Buell Motorcycles. It's a company and a family that will be missed.

JT

I hate to see any US company close, having said that I personally would rather they keep Buell and MV.A and lose HD. bete.
