![]() Aristotle Onassis (Self-made gazillionaire and Jackie Kennedy's second husband) used to have a swanky yacht that he would load up with Europe's hottest socialites and sail up and down the coast of the French Riviera. On that yacht was a bar next to a big swimming pool with barstools covered in snow-white leather. The old horndog would swaddle up to a drunken honey at the bar and ask her what she thought about the seats. After she finished rubbing her hand over the leather and cooing over how soft and luxurious they were, he'd lean in closer and let her in on a little secret. The seats were upholstered in whale foreskin. ![]() A company bought and refurbished the yacht in the late 90s and it's now available to rent for your parties. It's a great bargain too - at about $100,000 per day. ![]() http://www.yachting-greece.com/Christina_O.htm |

I'm hoping there is more to the crate than this pic shows. Metal studs don't have much strength unless they have wallboard of some type to keep them in position. (in this case, some thin plywood screwed to the outside) As it is structurally, just tying the crate down could pull it out of shape. I'll be anxious to see the condition the bike and crate arrive in, if this is all there is to it.

indeed...notice how he put the crate on the trailer before he put the bike in the crate...saved himself the hassle of trying to lift the crate onto the trailer. Doug ain't nearly as dumb as he looks

Damn Doug, Dirtster boxed up already? Time flies! Looking forward to your ride report. I had to laugh when I saw the pic of your buddy's shop. Wonder if anybody has puked behind there lately.

This n00b has never crated a bike. But I have uncrated a few, and, ... I've put a few thousand of those metal studs in walls. Maybe there is more to it. (the crate) I hope so.
The heads of the screws used in the construction of the crate will hinder the tight fit of any sheet, boxing material that might be applied to the outside of the crate. My experience in construction would not let me build it this way because I would fear it would not be rigid enough to withstand handling. I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time. |

... and the joinery, and the screw size, and thread, and bracing, and, ....
It could be 5" angle iron, and collapse on itself if not joined correctly. I don't think Doug needs my instructions. My intent was to issue a caution. He certainly should know by now if what he has done to complete the crate is sufficient for transport. Metal stud contruction is an engineered system. There are three primary components. The stud, the track, and the screws. Track replaces top and bottom plates (when compared to wood construction), and is used extensively when building rectangular boxes such as soffits, or fake beams. These components, sized correctly (dimension and gauge), along with proper technique, joining methods, make very strong structures. |

I think the crate needs chicken wire and some 5 v tin roofing.

A bit of binder twine and some duct tape oughta get that thing spiffed right up. Extra credit is awarded iff'n some of the crate ends up as part of the bike later.
