18OCT09 Ravensbourne National Park QLD Australia

My neighbour and a mate of his wanted to go for a ride, so who am I to say no. My neighbour has a KLR and his mate had a KTM 520 Exec and myself on a KLR. So I put together a rough trip outline taking into account the fuel range of the KTM.

So at 9 am on a fine coolish Sunday morning we departed to Ravensbourne National Park via Heleidon State Forest. We took the back roads from home in Ipswich through Rosewood, Grandchester, Laidley. Then through Forest Hill and onto the Warego Highway for a fill up for the KTM and a Maccas brekky.

The Plan was to take the back streets and get onto Wallers Rd and then onto 17 Mile Rd. through Ravensbourne National Park and then after that head home or do some more.

Well amazingly enough the GPS kept leading us onto roads that ended in properties The GPS quite clearly showed a road and later looking at Google Maps also showed roads.

Ranger Rd

Google Maps and my GPS show the road going through here

It was decided to head back to the Esk Gatton Rd. GPS is great to see where you are, how to get somewhere if the roads actually exisit but its hard to see the big picture. At the time did not know how close we were to where we wanted to go. This only became evident on return to home and looking at the GPS track on Google Earth.

So it was back to my old 4wd Stomping Ground first stop to check out where I will take the kids riding next weekend.

Good Spot for my kids to ride

Anyway onto 17 Mile Rd via the big hill . I am happy to say that since the last time I was here the hill has been improved to some degree. I hit a sandy patch and as per normal all the ingrained responses of what to do immediately came into play (NOT). All I can say I was happy I had my brown underwear on that day.

The Boys were waiting for me here after another patch in the vain hope I would fall off,,,,, happy to say they were disappointed.

Parts of this track are actually on street view Google cars go some strange places

After this we hit some seriously deep ruts,,,, there is a lot to be said for brown underwear. Did not stop to take some pics..

Ravensbourne National Park... Just a small NP but 17 mile rd is a nice good smooth ride. The plan was to turn off 17 mile rd onto Wellers Rd but after seeing this no smiling and having a good time sign it sort of became pointless. Too many signs like this nowadays.

No Smiling No Laughing no having a goodtime sign

After this was off too Esk for a drink for the KTM and whatever the local bakery had on offer...

Moss on the KTM was suffering from a bad case of Numb Bum

Not an Epic Journey,,,,, but it was great still to get out in the Australian Bush for a half a day

Ii enjoyed the piccy's, mick. your right about the all the no fun signs these days. I liked how the klr's look like 2 big bruisers standing next to Katie . Sometimes it's good to get out for decent days ride and knowing you'll be able to relax in the recliner when ya get home, cheers.

Good one Mick. I've done a bit of exploring in that area recently and I dropped into the Hampton tourist info centre and picked up 7 brochures of local 4wd drives. I've done 5 of them and found some nice roads interlocking the whole area.

See you out there one day.

Steve.
