the non-paintable version 'breathes' through the plastic so any paint you put on there will bubble up. I did it on dirtbike one time, not pretty.

maybe you could line it with POR-15

got jealous of the super tanker huh?

I've had my eye on the Exxon Valdeze tanks for a while, I like the ugly things. I'm leaning towards spraying Rhino Liner on the tank.
Now I have 4 gas tanks for the G/S, the stocker, two R100GS tanks and the HPN.

One GS tank has some custom art work

Should have my tranny back tomorrow, $1,700 dollars latter.

Parts needed-Cluster gear, intermediate gear, 5th gear selector fork, bearing, taller 5th gear, kick starter inners about 1,100 ($116 in shipping) dollars in parts, from moto bins, If I had purchased parts here I could have bought a new tranny from Chicago for about $2,100, but would have had to wait a while.

Airhead wrangler tells that my HPN tank is the paintable type, but the painter didn't prep right hence the paint is peeling... (that's how I got it)

I actually WANT a white tank, perhaps we can validate mine is the paintable type and we can TRADE?

SL out...

neat tank! If I ever get tired of looking like a Mad Max refugee I'd like to get an r100gs tank for mine. They're one of the better looking tanks out there. The small stock tanks are downright ugly.

Sorry to hear about the gearbox, man. If it makes you feel any better I've put $1500 into my gearbox and I still don't have a first gear.

Krylon Fusion has worked wonders on my tank, with no prep. I've spilled brake fluid, fork oil, motor oil you name it on that thing. My gas cap has leaked since I got it so it's been getting a gasoline rinse for almost a year. If I bother to wipe the black mess off around the cap I find a nice satin Hunter Green underneath it.

Without doubt, use Fusion, without primer, when you repaint.

Brad you got the nylon version though right??? I've read good and bad on the Krylon, leaning towards Rhino Liner.

BTW I LIKE the stock tank.

Solo, the white on my tank is discolored and scratched up from a bogus DA sanding job, hence wanting to paint. Weird thing is that once I removed the crappy paint I have two shades of white, the top layer is purer white and doesn't sand off very well at all, if at all, and under that it's off white. Puzzling.

oh yeah, cost me $100 extra

What have you read bad about the krylon? I painted a dirtbike with it a few years ago and, other than the gas tank, the stuff still looks good.

Honestly, if it's white that's what I want.... and I am too cheap to paint mine... How bad does it look?

Otherwise I might have to take bgood's advice, but I HATE painting.

On the gas tanks Polyethelene, I've read of some bubbling, must be the breathing, but you never can tell how people prep things for paint.

Solo, the tank is splotchy and not to uniform on the color, I can try to get a picture together.

yeah I hate painting too. It takes patience, something I have nothing of. I painted my fork legs today and didn't want to wait 24 hours to reassemble the bike. I ended up smudging some of the half cured paint after 2 hours. At least you can't see it.

I'll probably be repainting my bike next year. Santa Mom might be getting me some side covers and they'd look funny with a nice paint job when everything else is trashed. My tank has the gas stains on it and my fairing has a thousand nicks in it from all the dirt roads I did last summer.

Krylon Fusion will bubble up like any other paint on a plastic tank

I'm neck deep in a painting project (no I won't paint yours) right now, old Chevy work truck, not just paint but rust repair i.e. welding. Hope to get the cab completely primed this weekend if it doesn't get to damned cold again (painting primer out side).
I'd hate to wast the time painting a tank only to have to strip it again. There is some sort of plastic primer prep sold at the auto body paint store, but man I hat to buy the stuff to paint only to have is peel and bubble. So maybe rhino liner, still trying to figure out what to do.

auto body welding. Man that's gotta be tough. Everything I weld comes out looking like it has cancer. I'd hate to have to weld something where looks matter.

I've never been able to find anyone that can confirm or deny that the truck bed liner won't bubble either. I looked into it back when I did the dirtbike.

Also, there are probably some differences between the brands. Rhino Liner, Line-X, also there's a spray on truck bed liner. Maybe one works and the others don't

It may end up as an ugly but functional touring tank. Heck, that describes my whole bike. At least you got spare tanks when you want to go pick up Hooters chicks.

That's because your using flux core and not MIG

Haven't picked up a girl on the G/S, But if I found one that liked it..oooh might be somethin' serious.

For sex work I'll use the RRS

If the tank is PE
Then paint's not going to stick to it for long.
Even paint that's designed to stick to oily plastics like Fusion.

PE tanks out-gas, this will bubble paint.
