Certainly easier than reassembling the factory unit blind and getting all the bits resyncronized.

My two so far

One from the vantage point where my (one of them) 1985 M535i can be seen in the background, My happy son on the 1978 R100RS,

And from that cockpit where the 1970 R60/5 can be seen,

And the R60 in front of work.

Picked up this 1974 R90/6 yesterday. It last ran in 1998 and sat outside under a tarp for at least the last couple of years. I haven't decided yet if I will resurrect it or will use it as a parts donor for the other two 1974's I have (R90, R75). My inclination is to maybe get it running but if that happens I'll be inclined rehabilitate it. The picture probably shows it better than it actually is. The gas tank, which attracted me to it in the first place, is in good condition. The engine is not frozen. Carbs need a total rebuild. Tranny was supposedly working fine when parked (with the speedo drive cable not inserted) but I haven't checked the fluid/drain plug condition yet. True mileage unknown as the odo doesn't work according to the PO. All in all a fairly complete bike that I'm excited to have in the "stable." The wife thinks it's cute but, of course, she also asks "how many bikes can you ride at one time?"

This pic is a bit more representative of the overall condition of my "barn find." Although I tried to decline the offer, the PO insisted I take along the Windjammer fairing that was originally installed on the bike (that explains the plastic front turn signal housings). I'm not a big fan of tail trunks either but this one is actually one of the more pleasing smaller ones I've seen. No sidebags but perhaps someone can tell me what bags the racks were designed for. It may be the wrong thing to do but I've already sprayed pretty much the whole bike with WD 40. Fortunately the rust on the tailpipes looks to be mostly superficial but the internal condition is unknown. My problem is that I feel I should devote most of my wrenching/maintenance time to the 2 bikes I do ride (R75/6, R100GS). I mean, aren't there always some item of deferred maintenance that should be done but haven't been done.

If you want to ditch the seat and tachometer, I know another '74 R90/6 that would appreciate 'em.

Here's the other side of the bike. Paid $350. Seatpan has some rust and no hooks but I'll keep you in mind if I end up cannibalizing it. If I do I'll probably use the gauges for both odo and speedo parts on my R75 and my two other "project" bikes that I know both have gauge issues. The PO is scrounging around for the key and other misc. parts which he may still have buried in his garage. Maybe he'll find a Heinrich tank but I'll settle for a set of sidecovers. He told me several times that this bike was the "around town" bike for a guy from San Francisco who used to race BMW's but that's all the info I have on that. Supposedly broken odo reads 1944 mi. so he figures it probably turned over but really doesn't know as he only put about 800 miles on it before he parked in order to install a set of Mikuni's on it (1998). She has sat ever since. I've never named my bikes but may call this one Alice as it was parked next to the famed Alice's Restaurant under the green tarp for a few years. A Norcal Airhead who somehow spotted it posted the availability of this bike on our local airlist. I expected the bike would no longer be there when I rode up to Alice's 3 weeks later and was suprised that it was. I was able to lift the tarp enough to see that it had the big tank that appeared ok and that was enough to interest me despite the rough appearing condition of everything else visible to me. Anyway Alice is home now although parked nex to the shed with a tarp over her. Gotta make some room in my crowded 1/2 of the garage.

Might want to start your own thread for that sucker because it's going to be one hell of a clean up.

Alices' Restaurant was located in Stockbridge, MA.... you're in CA?

And yes, that bike is worthy of it's own thread.
My call would be, if the alloy case is that bad on the outside, you're looking at major stuff inside....
