Avoid 40 near Asheville

There is a report that a massive rock slide has covered a portion of Highway 40 between the TN/NC border and Asheville. It was reported it should take weeks, if not months, for the rock slide to be cleaned up to the point that traffic will be allowed to travel again.

I hope there isn't anyone under the rocks!

link

here is a link with a picture. Reports are that no injuries occurred.

http://news.aol.com/article/rockslid...arolina/735448 .

Good thing for us riders is that there are plenty of excellent and fun detours along this route anyway.

Yeah, I was out for a ride today and came onto the interstate from one of the little roads with no ramp, and headed west from about milemarker 12 or 13. I knew something was wrong because there was zero traffic. I got within 4 miles of the slide when I noticed barricades on the entrance ramps, and I exited at 7. The slide turned out to be milemarker 3. An emergency worker in Hartford said not to worry, they'll have it cleaned up by the first of the year . People are trying to get around it several different ways. Traffic was much heavier than usual on the Cattaloochee Rd, Roundmountain/Maxpatch Rd, and 209.

Just use 209 and 25/70. That's what we had to do before I 40 was built.

Wow - not too far from Buzzard's Roost/Hurricane Creek, which I hope to ride this winter.

So I take it the entire section from MM-7 in NC and MM-451 in TN is closed?
