I think the lack of success of the KLX line exists in the KLX450R. Now first let me say that I have put my money down and phurchased two KLXs in the last 3 years. My neighbor bought a new (left over) KLX450R this last summer, partially because I own KLXs.

The problem with these machines (KLX450R) is that they will not function properly as delivered. They run lean and hot. On hot days they litterally boil the fuel out of the tank. The battery is small and weak, which normally would not be a problem, but when coupled with a lean bike that stalls when warm you end up trying to kick a reluctant to start machine ... alot. The chain guide pukes in a few rides. I have pushed, kicked, and swore at this new machine more than my last three combined, and it doesn't even belong to me.

All of these items are fixable. JD makes a jet kit that fixes the lean jetting, a chain guide that doesn't suck is available. The tank can be insulated, and the jetting seems to reduce the boiling. But just like the foolishly restrictive stock pipe on my KLX250s, defects that esentially prevent proper operation stock really hurt the KLX line's image. It is a real shame that two off road rides were esentially wrecked because this thing needed to be "sorted" in ways that Kaw should have handeled.

I think you'll find this is not a unique situation, when it comes to the 450 enduro class, in general. Search the technical forums for any of the modern four-fiddies, and you'll quickly discover that, thanks mostly to ever-tightening govt regs, that they all come delivered in a corked-up state that requires some after-market tweaking to dial in properly.

But the good news is, they can all, including the KLX450R, be turned into truly amazing off road bikes for a relatively small cost outlay. About $150 will get you a JD jetting kit, a PMB exhaust insert, and a heavy-duty chain guide to sort out the KLX450R.

Where did you get the rear rack from?

Yeah, I kinda dig that one, too.

I should jump over my camera more often.

Tell me I should buy this..

Okay I live in Alabama where plating a dirt bike should be very easy. That being said, I have the opportunity of buying a BRAND NEW '08 model for $3000.00 out the door from my local dealer. I currently ride a Sherpa and am looking for something with a little more grunt. I know this isn't the ideal bike for my needs but I think this price is too ridiculous to pass up...

Best trail bike I`ve had

Ive had mine since Aug. 08
Mods:
fredette racing handgaurds, and chainguide, trail tech vector speedo, ram mount for Zumo gps,FMF Q4 ti silencer w/sparkarrester.FMF power bomb stainless steel header,Tm design works swing arm protector, Rekluse adjustable front offset axle,Sicass racing dual sport kit,Hyde racing skid plate, and Nutech tubless tire inserts. Jeff Fredette set me up with the right needle. I added an xrs only fuel screw. Jetting otherwise stock. Also switched the antifreeze to Evans waterless coolant .
Had all this on for 09 season and put 100hrs on the bike.Had a Revloc auto clutch on my 01 ktm520exc but did not feel the need for it on the Kaw.My 2 frequent riding buddies have 300xcw`s and I have no trouble keeping up. The ex. system really made difference in power and speed. Yes its a bit louder but still passes Mi. sound tests usually testing 91/93dba. I ride a lot of CCC organized trail rides and the bike has to pass to sign up.
Rebuilt the top end this spring as it had 140 hrs on it and did not want to break it, but only road it 16 hrs last summer. Suspensions gonna get freshened up for 2011 and may try a seatconsepts seat cause I may run more dualsports. l8r
