It's a ten hour ride for us if we slab it, and we probably will. My goal is to get there Thursday evening, preferably in time for the goodies.

Only problem now is that we just lost our babysitter for the weekend. So we're scrambling to make alternate arrangements.

Todd (ADVTenn) asked me to put up my thoughts about his ride to clarify. I've also got pictures that'll be up sometime today, hopefully.

No big bikes.

It's not that you can't take a 990/1200 GS/V-Strom up these trails. You can. But it's the fact that you will work your ass off and if for any reason you drop it you're screwed. At one point we stopped on the single track and I realized that if you drop the bikes going down a steep, steep hill and the ONLY way it would get back up would be with a winch/truck/chain. Also if you have a mechanical of any kind, tire, battery, etc. there is no way that you're getting anything larger than a small 4-wheeler back in there so it's going to be either fix it or push the thing out.

That being said I know there are some people out there that consider a 990 or Super Enduro to be glorified enduro bikes. If you're an A level rider with NEW, full knobbies and have no objection to multiple stream crossings, log hops, and laugh at the ever present possibility of dropping your $10,000+ bike, then you're crazy enough to go on this trail.

I don't think a V-Strom will make it up the trails simply because of the ground clearance.

I don't think a GS with a Boxer engine will make it because of the cylinder heads and the rocks. (At one point we were riding up an old stream bed.)

A 990 would be pushing it. I had a 908 rear/Karoo front and there were times the tires were washing out just riding on the off-camber trail. A Super Enduro, being a little lighter, would be better, plus when you drop it there's not much nice plastic to break.

Remember, these are just my thoughts. I've had a V-Strom, Super Enduro, and am riding a 990 now and this is with two decades of off-road riding experience under my belt.

I am not trying to say that these bikes, nor their riders, are incapable of riding this terrain. I'm merely saying that you stand a much higher chance of not having much fun due to the work you'll put in, the possibility of crashing and breaking the bike to the point you can't get home, or God forbid, hurting yourself to where the others in the group will have to stop their ride to try and figure out how to get you the few miles back to the closest road where a truck might make it in order to get you to the closest hospital, which for the places this ride is going, is a WAYS off.

However, I do strongly recommend that if you have any of these bikes put some street legal knobbies on them. There are still a TON of roads in the area that were built for bikes like this. High speed, big sweepers with mud, dirt, and gravel where you can go full Whiskey Throttle and power slide through the turns like Marc Coma. Almost every mile on the Blue Ridge Parkway it seems that you see gravel roads going off into the woods. If you want to see what some of the roads look like see if you can dig up "My East Tennessee" in Ride Reports.

Tennessee/North Carolina/Virginia is a fantastic place for motorcycles because no matter what you bring, with what tires, with whatever riding ability you have, there is SOMETHING close by where you will have a ball. Don't hesitate at all to PM me or any other local to ask advice. The whole reason we're doing this is because we want people to come down and have a good time at the Rally.
