The 4th Gen/2014 Forester looks a lot better then the outgoing 3rd Gen. More sporty like the older 1st and 2nd Gen.

The original Forester was wagon-sized. The current Forester is a small-midsize SUV. It grows with every update.

I have an 08 Outback XT Limited I'm about to put up for sale once it quits raining and I can get some decent pics. 41k miles, 2.5L turbo and the all important 5 spd manual transmission. Too bad you are 1600 miles away. Of course I just did a fly and drive from Green Bay to Austin last weekend which was only 200 miles shorter.

Yes, I can see this auto thread devolving into a TDI thread but...

I can't figure out why Toyota et al hybrid makers don't go diesel on their hybrid engines. More fuel efficient generation, lower maintenance, etc.

and yes, both of my cages are wagons: Volvo flying brick and VW Jetta TDI. Love them both equally, but don't like the VW on long trips; it is a Jetta after all.

The only reason I can think of is the cost. Last time I checked a Prius was around $25K about the same as a Golf diesel which is at a minimum of $5K more than a Gasoline Golf, so we'd be talking about a Prius that would be somewhere around ~$30K (if Toyota used the same logic in pricing as VW). The closest car in Toyota's line up to the Prius is the Matrix which is <$20K and already gets 30mpg! At 30mpg & $3/gal you could buy 100,000 gallons of gasoline with the $10K you saved or drive 3 million miles (if I did the math correctly).

100,000 gallons of gas at $3/gal would cost $300,000. But it is kinda cool to know that if you bought a Matrix instead of a Ferrari or Lambo, you could drive 3 million miles with the savings.

I'm becoming appalled at the upcharge VW is adding for TDI. When I bought ours, it was about $900 over gas. Not to mention the very infrequent service our 03 has required compared to new intervals. TCO is nuts for anything alternative when you factor in original purchase costs. Guess I'll keep ours and find the $$ to fix the rust holes.
