hitting a guard rail high sided on a wet road in gravel

I suppose it is not often that you get video of your crash, sometimes it is better if we do not, I made all of the mistakes that you could make, cold wet roads, a right hand turn which in Pa almost always means gravel in the corner. I was waved on by the car but it was a steep down hill which means even less traction. Minus some deep tissue damage to my arm and some serious bruising on my legs I limped away. I rode the bike back to the hotel 50 miles away with no clutch lever, the guys stopped at each intersection to stop traffic so I coulds slow down but not have to come to a complete stop.

Being a optomist in life I took my mistake and turned it into a commercial for my company figuring to make the best of it.

I have been riding for 35 years, the best advice I ever got from one of my friends was.

You know that voice in your head that asks "Should I do this" at our age it is better to say if you have to ask yourself should I make this pass, the answer should be always be NO

Video here if you care to watch me hit the guard rail the camera is rear facing. I am a riding instructor with the CSBA and use it to teach others form and technique, and to help keep riders from doing stupid stuff while not intending to be the example; there is no reason not to share a teachable moment ...Bob

Yeah, back in 1968 when I was young and stupid(er), if I went around a corner and the back end slid or I dragged parts hard enough to give the bike a jolt it was like: "Weeeee, let's do that again!" Now I'm 60 the biggest "mistake" I want to make on a a ride is: "I took that corner slower than I could safely have."

I was lucky in that I did not hit the posts that hold up the guard rail they are only about 6 feet apart or so and I went righ through them and ended up in the other side, about 6 to 8 fet past it. My guess if I had hit them solid it would have been bad.

On a side note the damage that I got from the guard rail on my arm. gave me a bad cut from the impact and I could not stop the bleeding. I ended up going to a store and getting some super glue to hold the skin together to stop the bleeding. I had read about using that somewher and decided to give it a try. It work great, I should have gotten stiches but the super glue did its job. I now carry it with me in my tool bag incase I or someone else with me needs it

In Pa it is not against the law to pass in a double yellow line area only remaining in the opposite lane for an extented time. In this area of Pa there are no passing zones to speak of where it is marked for passing except on the major roads, the back roads are all marked in double yellow lines.

Visiblity was good there was not a lack of room for the pass. I was waved on by the driver also very common in this area. It is a big rally car area and most of the locals either seem to wave you by or race you. They are by far the most courteous drivers I have ever encounterd.

Lots of mistakes were made here, I am not making excuses I only hope that what I share may make someone else more aware when they do pass. If I were self rightious I would have never shared the video...Bob

Superglue

Superglue was originally developed for the military to quickly close battlefield wounds. It also works great for those painful cracks you can get on your hands in wintertime, just put a drop on and the pain stops immediately.

Wet roads and riding with buddies always makes nervous. I've done it, but I'm just the last guy into camp.
