One broken throttle cable is all, we overcame that. I think that cable was 30 something years old too. Have to get a higher quality one next time.

Ride Report - Dual Sport/Adventure Tour Ride

Seven bikes turned out for today's ride - four dual sports and three adventure touring bikes. Great weather for the mostly dirt/gravel roads we covered after departing Morganton.

Here are the bikes on Old NC 105.

Shortly after the picture above was taken, one of the dual sports experienced a broken throttle cable. Tools from several bikes were gathered and repairs commenced.

The team effort resulted in swapping out the push shutoff cable for the pull throttle cable and buttoning it back up. (Reuben does not like to perform these repairs in a well lit garage with a full assortment of tools. That doesn't provide him with a sufficient challenge.)

Lunch at Famous Louise's in Linville Falls.

Taking a break on Brown Mountain Beach Rd before heading up Maple Grove Rd.

Augie: Thank you for leading the ride today.

Had a fantastic time today with everyone. It was really great riding with you guys and I hope to do it again sometime. Big thanks to everyone for their patience, first with us showing up to the meet spot 30 mins late and then for waiting around while we fixed my bike (and for those who brought along tool kits and got their hands dirty with me - THANK YOU!) Augie, thanks for planning the route and leading. Had a blast chasing you through the mountains on that KLR, you had that thing MOVING!

Really had a very, very good day. I'll post up some pics once I have them downloaded - but for now, I'm spent!

Hope you guys do it again soon, I found out about the ride too late and didn't have time to get ready for it. I'm definitely in for the next one!

.....just got back from Orlando and Nassau and wanted to bump this...

Rode around Nassau and Paradise Island on a scooter on Friday. Between that and the trip to St. Kitts/Nevis in February, I'm getting the hang of this "riding on the wrong side of the road" thing!

I'll post this here, maybe if we show everybody what they're missing we can gather up some more for the next meetup.

Here's the general idea of what we did yesterday. The straight line to Colletsville is where my GPS locked up. Imagine a bunch of squiggly lines there also.

I ate that KLRs dust all day. Well, when I was close enough to see his dust anyway.

Meeting up with the trailer queens, whose dust I also ate all day.

First stop.

Beautiful views to be had.

Famous Louise's

Another stop.

Perfect weather to ride, great day.

Last stop before the ride was back at the meetup place.

Thanks augiedog for breaking me in. It was great day, we need to do it again.

Lost my trick Throttlemeister right bar end weight somewhere along the ride yesterday.

Before:

After:

Guess all of that vibration chasing those dual sports shook it loose. If any of you are back up in that area, please find it and bring it back to me. Shouldn't be too hard to find: it's round and silver.

I rode down through Mortimer on the way home yesterday in hopes that I might just happen to see y'all. No such luck but I did meet Gaston Gagne driving a pickup full of kayaks.

Since we had a couple conversations about it, I guess I should mention I have a swaging tool for the ferrules of the brake/shift snakes if anyone wants to borrow it. I also have cable/ferrules here if anyone wants to have a 'cable everything in sight' party. I work for beer, nice IPAs preferred. One beer per side.

It costs about $5 for both sides. $1.37 for a ferrule package (you need 2) and maybe about a buck a foot for 3/32" vinyl coated cable. Two feet will get you both sides and one screw up... ask me how I know...

It's kind of a three armed job, but with enough imaginative verbiage, two arms can get the job done.

I made the shifter just long enough to pull over the end in case I want to disassemble it.

Brake just loops through two convenient holes. If I ever need to take either piece very far from the other I'll have to cut it and make another. A couple bucks, no biggie.
