I had a blast today

Great ride - although now I really want some knobbies for the Ulysses! Those trails today were a lot of fun. I'm glad I was finally able to really get out and ride the Ulysses how it was intended to be ridden!

I shot video from almost all day, so I'll try to cut down the footage and throw some clips up. Looking back at the video, it's hard to tell just how slick that mud was - but I think I've been on ice with more traction!

I did get a screenshot of Augie's run-in with the Suburu:

Much better to be in the ditch than to be a hood ornament! Thanks for leading today, that was a great route.

Mountain Mudfest

Those of you who chose to spend the day in a recliner watching Gilligan's Island re-runs missed a great opportunity to hone your skills riding on slick, muddy dirt roads with ruts. We had a good turnout with a nice mixture of bikes.

- Augie, KLR650
- Larry, KLR650
- Alan, DR650
- James, Tiger 800
- Loren, BMW F650
- Nate, KLR650
- Chris, Buell Ulysses
- Numa, V-Strom

Nominees for the 'Big Gnads' Award include:

- Augie for playing chicken with a Subaru
- Loren for riding tough after having a mishap
- Chris for riding a Uly with slicks in the mud

Riders cast your votes!

Route included Maple-Sally Rd, Rt 90, Roseboro Rd and Old NC 105 with lunch at Famous Louise's.

We even crossed paths with ADVGirlCharlotte who looked stunning in KLIM Haute Couture.

Numa

First my vote, then my contribution... Let's just say I wouldn't run the bald tire that was on the front of that Uly on the street let alone the dirt, wet dirt to boot.

Stats from my GPS had me at 286 miles round trip door to door. Take 76 miles off that for my round trip to Bojangles and it was a 210 mile day with everyone. 21,900 feet in elevation changes and about 30 mph average.

Now for some phone pics.

The rag tag group.

Wow, Scorpion Trails on that Uly. I was in the garage until 9 the night before taking the Scorps OFF my bike before the ride.

Nobody's been there before... no wait, it's "famous". I never knew that place was in 3 counties either.

On top the mountain.

The road ahead.. This is what makes it for me.

Awesome Tiger in the background there, too bad we're headed home.

Last but not least, my video. Came out a couple minutes longer than I wanted, ended up 14 minutes long with the middle part just me following fresh thumper tracks. I may rearrange it and post another instead some day.

Thanks again to Augie for leading the ride, it was a great day!

Another vote for the xb! You guys don't give the big Buell enough credit! Honestly, I thought Numa and Loren would have more trouble than I did - but other than the wet sections, I felt solid on the Uly.

The front was okay on the road - it just looked bald with all the mud smoothing it out! It was a pure street tire, though. A leftover from the previous owner, and will be replaced.

I ordered a new scorpion trail for the front today. Still a touring/commuter tire - but - I'm working on a deal for a complete set of spare wheels. If I can work that out, I'm going to get a set if TKC 80's for them, and swap to those for trail riding.

I could probably find a used DR or KLR, but I really don't have the room for another bike right now, and honestly, the Uly was fun in the dirt. The 17" front will always leave something to be desired going over ruts, but should do fine on trails with TKC's.

Where do you guys get your tires mounted? I usually go to Smiley's, as he only charges $25 to mount and balance if I bring him the wheel. I'd like to do it myself but don't have the tools (yet).

Put a few pictures up over here.

I'm not sure, but I think Loren did have something akin to trouble.
