I want a F800GS but it's too tall

The F650GS fits me perfect but I'd like the power of the 800. I'm thinking about replacing my 1200GS next year. I'll probably go with a low 1200GS but I'd consider a 800 if I could lower it about 2". Going with a 800 would also save me some bucks.

What are you trying to do flat foot it? Not necessary. I have a 30" inseam with the low seat and I can't flat foot it. I can only put the toes down of both feet. I haven't found that to be a problem. I only put one foot down at a light. So its a little harder to back it into a parking spot. I am not riding it on single track so I don't worry about being able to put both feet down if necessary. The bike is very well balanced. Unless you can't even touch with one foot you are selling yourself short.

I'm with you man, cept I do enjoy riding single track, I've been a some hairy stuff with mine and dropped it several times due to [lack of] footing (wear protection for the bike and you!). I usually Captain Morgan it whenever I stop and I am sure the peeps at the stop lights get a kick out of it.

I have the low seat but also upgraded suspension (heavy fork oil and progressive springs) which makes it sit a tiny bit higher without luggage.

Low 800

Hyperpro makes a lowering set with springs and shock I believe.

What's your inseam? If you're on a 1200, you'll be fine on the 800, you only need to touch down with 1 foot.. and if you have to, scoot your butt off the seat a bit to get a better reach to the ground.. With my 30" inseam, it's perfect for me. Don't let your inseam sway you away.

I agree with the other guys. I have a 29" inseam at best and I am alright with the low seat.

If it makes you feel better....

Well ... if it makes you feel better:

The extra HP doesn't come on tap until somewhere around 6K RPM

Part of the extra HP is due to requirement to burn premium gas
(Note with the F800GS you can get the dealer to detune it so you can burn regular gas and loose a couple of HP)

The F658 is about 20lbs lighter

The F658 is ~$2K less expensive

The 658 has tubeless tires ... something I found out that I really like during a meditation session on a back country road 100 miles from anywhere with a tire plugger in my hand ....

Some folks think the 658 has less of a problem with "snatchy throttle".

How am I do'n so far????

I have a 30" inseam. While many short riders feel they can handle a tall bike I do not. I have almost dropped my GS1200 (standard seat) many times. If you ride behind a rider on a bike that's too tall it becomes obvious they have little control at low speeds.

I'm at my limit with the GS1200, the 800 is even taller. The low seat on a works for me but I think I may be sacrificing some comfort due to less padding. If I could lower it 2" I'd be good.

I sometimes wonder if some miss the point on bikes being too tall??
I'm 5'8 with a 30" inseam and am looking to get back on a bike after 23 yrs of not owning a bike. Admittedly the Geezer Factor may be kicking in as I'll soon be 60(not as limber as I once was).
While I have no problem once I'm on a taller bike, I find my heel catching on the seat getting on. I especially find this a problem with seats that rake up at the back. Thought I wanted a Ducati a few months ago, but the seat design is impossible. So I sometimes think it's the shape of the seat not the height that's the problem?

F800 feels good to me

I'm 5'8" and about 160lbs. so I was concerned about bike size as well. When I was looking I tried the 650 single, the 650 twin (658?), and the 800. At the time the 800 felt a little big for me, but that is what I ended up getting (with standard seat). After a couple of months of riding, it has settled a bit so I can almost flat foot at a light fairly easily, and my perception of the bike's size has change as well - the mind adjusts. I have gotten into situations off road where a shorter bike would have been easier, but most of the time it feels pretty darn good! Just my $.02.

30" inseam too, so here a thought:

Lots of folks in many threads mention that the F800GS is not worth the premium over the F650GS. I had the same revelation about the lowered R1200GS vs. the 800 with a low seat. A 2" drop (and low seat) on the R1200GS was amazing! I had the sensation that the CG was lowered from above the tank to down around the cylinder heads. That bike fit like a glove - except that it was a $19,000 glove vs. $12,000 for the 800. Couldn't justify the jump. I've had wood for the 800 since it was announced - but the lowered 1200 was the shiny object I couldn't ignore. Ultimately, I stayed with the 800 and am extremely happy with the bike.

I rather like the way the low seat is shaped - like a horse saddle. For the 2-lane Route 66 style pavement, dirt, gravel and fire roads that I ride, it's perfect. If I were 6'4", I'd still want a seat shaped like that.

On the other hand, for single track and serious off-road - I prefer the 2x4 that my KLX offers. I can shift my weight around easier.

So a 30" inseam should not be a limiting factor with the F800gs.
