Racing the 2010 Baja 1000 with Team Snortn' Boar

The journey for me began just a few short weeks before the actual race. Racinace had invited me along long before, but just to help with pit duties, chasing, fetching cervezas and whatnot, but the old work/time/money/motivation thing was getting in the way. On Thursday Oct. 28 I sent Racinace a text asking him if I should bring my bike to the 24 Hour race at Starvation Ridge as I was only planning on being there to support my son who was on Racinace's son's (Robby) team. He texted back to me that they had an opening on team Snortn' Boar and asked if I would like to do it... right about that same time the phone rang...

Ace: yeah we had a guy drop out, wanna race the 24?

Me: uh, yeah sure I guess.

Ace: Wanna race Baja too?

Me: Excuse me?

Ace: Wanna race the Baja 1000?

Me: Am I being Punk'd?

Suddenly the world was spinning really fast. Racing the B1k was a whole 'nother matter. This could be a once in a lifetime experience, and then the wife gave me the go-ahead... it was ON BABY!

I took my first motorcycle trip to Baja last year at the same time with High Desert Adventures. It was a total blast...mostly. Here's the link to that RR: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=516832

To go down and be a member of a team actually racing, man what a treat. I could NOT pass this opportunity up. I think I would regret that decision for the rest of my life.

Plans were rapidly made and I called my buddy Pat (N2moto) to see if he was at all interested in going. He's a fast guy and was actually asked to race months and months ago, but his job and family life were in a little flux and he passed. Now things have changed a little and a quick call to the boss and a real quick trip to Seattle to get a rush on a passport and the deal was sealed. We would leave Thursday 11/10, drive to Reno and pick up Racinace, then blitz down to the border.

While Ace was working on the race bike...

Pat and I found that in Alturas someone had thrown away a perfectly good bunny...

wtf???

The longgggg drive down to Baja was uneventful, we hit some stretches of snow on the road thru the Mammoth area but nobody was checking for chains or anything...

A quick stop at Ham Radio Outlet in San Diego to pick up the VHF radio I had ordered and we were headed to the border, we definitely wanted to cross before dark. We crossed into Mexico right at dusk and the cervezas were promptly cracked into...

We stayed in La Bufadora (the blowhole) just south of Ensenada with a super great couple named Mike and Judy who have hosted and supported the SBR team in the past. Awesome place and awesome people. Can't thank them enough...

N2 saddled up for a trip to Ensenada:

Mike and Judy's, they took such good care of us:

Nice views too:

Here's a short vid of "La Boof"

Day 1 of Pre-running: I would drive the van and trailer. Pre-running was only open from Ojos Negros southward so we got up bright and early and jammed out to Ojos to meet Matt, a Desert Assassins crew guy...

The roads in Baja are freaking treacherous. I felt much safer riding my bike...

Truck vs. Horse, truck barely won:

Lunch in Valle de Trinidad, yep, just up the street from where the Trophy Truck hit the motorhome in Dust To Glory...

We had some delicious roasted chicken, fries, etc...4 of us for about $8.

Vid just east of San Matias:

Keep it going mate.

I had an invite over 3 years ago to come and do Baja 1000 which still stands today.
Here is hoping and planing.......

If you can put in the bits about what you learnt and would have changed type stuff would be great.
