I'm going RTW... Honda XR650L rear wheel problems, pleeeease help!

I'm on a round the world bike trip, and after crossing Mongolia and Russia my rear wheel is good for the scrap heap.
20,000 miles so far, 25,000 to go

I'm on a budget, a really tight budget.
Like $20 a day.
Please don't suggest going to Excel and getting a race wheel built with stainless spokes and titanium rims.

can anyone help me out somehow?
I know the XR600 also wheels fit..

Many thanks
Gabe

oooops sorry to get you excited too quick. i mean willing to help in the $ collection and raised enough fund.

$20 from me.

if we can collect @ $270 shipping included, we should be fine, unless we can find a less expensive alternative.

Gotta love ADV

hi folks,

Thanks very much for the offers of help. Although it's extremely kind of you to offer financial help, I coudn't possibly accept your money.

There are many more people that have a greater need than I do, really I just wanted to see if anyone knew of a way I might fix the wheel for cheap.

...and it seems that someone has. I just got an email this morning, and this may be the answer. (Thanks Steven!)

So thanks again, I love ADV

Update, and begging for yet more help!

I'm now in Corvallis, tomorrow riding to Gold Beach to stay with 'sector' then on South to the Eureka area, where we're hoping to stay for a couple of weeks or so.

So if anyone's going to be in the Eureka/Arcata area over the next couple weeks, or can give me some kind of fun riding suggestions for this part of the world, then I'd be keen to arrange something.

One more thing I'd like to shamelessly beg for... The waterproof bag that I used to carry my sleeping bag, has been mutilated after I got it caught up in the rear wheel.
Did well to get me from UK to Siberia, but now it's dead.

So has anyone in this area got an old dry-bag that I might purchase for a small fee? I guess it needs to be about 30 litres+

Thanks folks, and God bless ADV

I think it would help if you described SPECIFICALLY what is wrong with your rear wheel?

Is it a wheel bearing problem, metallurical fatigue issue, simply smashed, broken spokes, etc?

Thanks.

Wheel is sorted..

The wheel situation is resolved, a very kind ADV rider, MCMA111 has offered to trade my knackered wheel for his very usable wheel!
He's looking to rebuild the wheel using an aftermarket rim and spokes, and so only needs the hub.

Just to complete the picture..
I snapped a couple of spokes crossing Mongolia, the remaining ones are so siezed into the nipples that they snap before they tighten. many of them are loose, and cannot be tightened.
The rim's also a bit warped.

Any chance that anyone can help with the dry bag? Maybe I'm asking this in the wrong place, the title of this post isn't exactly related to dry bags.

I'm now in Arcata, and what a blessing it is to be in the dry again. Spetacular riding round here, I just had a superb blast round today, stunning scenery and sweet country lanes.

Thanks people

in the Eureka, Arcata area

Just a little bit south of Eureka is Ferndale, take Matole Rd and make a loop into the Redwood park.
Could be worth checkin out the Samoa Cookhouse even if yer on a $20/day budget.
Up North a little is Fern Canyon and Agate Beach.
If there's bad weather, meaning BIG WAVES, head over to the Jetty and watch the Coast Guard training in their rescue boats.
Don't know if it's still open but you used to be able to take a tour of the Mill in Scotia, it was worth it just to watch the hydraulic debarker.

If ya still need a dry bag and yer comming through Sacramento let me know.

Have a blast
