Cool2 My RT has the capability to learn

I noticed an interesting change in how my bike ran over the course of my ride to Choopa (about 3000 miles).

I tuned it three days before the ride, then read some shit on advrider that made me doubt my retarded renchin' skills, so I did it again the next day and after a short ride, it was running tits. No surge, smooth, good powerband and just a little edgy in the topend. LGB installed. Motronic reset, TPS range set.

The first 500 miles of the trip, the bike ran as expected. But after I flogged the shit out of her in 80F for 90 miles of highway 96 along the Klamath River, she started idling rough and surging like a pig at 25mph through little towns. On the otherhand, she was begging for more at the topend. I was constantly riding the rev-limiter, not just banging into it.

It seems she learned to love the hard, hot, fast riding, while forsaking all in-town manners. It was gooood for me, cuz I likes to go fast and keep the revs up. She was decidedly unhappy about going slow.

I haven't reset the motronic to test this theory, cuz everytime I thought of doing it, I had stuff strapped to the bike.

Kinda cool. Kinda not. It would be good if it could run strong all the time.

Do you pre-stretch your throttle cables before you sync? This was recommended with the old single-cable design, where you would use a throttle lock to hold the throttle open overnight to make sure the cable was at its longest before making a sync adjustment. This might explain why your bike started running rough after flogging it for awhile.....the cables stretched and threw it out of sync.

heard from a BMW tech that the ABS can be reset to the various bike weights if you grab a hand full of brakes 3 times. It will adust a sensor to heavy or light loads.

I actually do the work nessesary (sic) to make my bike run well. Hell, it runs as strong as an S, mang. Hell, it's *is* an S with a bigger fairing. My BMW techs do a fine job of making it run right. The LGB made most of the difference, as did breaking it in correctly, and I'm sure the Remus helps too.

Gents,

I'm sure this will offend, but, so be it.

Here's a good thread started by fish about probably the one key component to all the engine management complaints about the RT, foremost surging, and it degenerates into utter bullshit.

Where's the beef? Where's the data? Why am I wasting valuable riding time reading this crap?

You all bitch about the other board (will someone tell me what MRN means?) but at least, on occaision, in between platitudes and pc-ness, there's a grain of truth and information.

Trust me, I appreciate the fun and attitude. But how about a little more heft.

Loose

BTW, the reason the surge issue, in whatever configuration (LPB, OGB, no plug) is so confounding is the very fact that the 2.4 is "smart". Like the ABS, it takes a number of restarts to "unlearn" its latest state of tune. This fact manifests itself in the myriad "it was great when I left the dealer but now it sucks" complaints we read. Short of rebooting it each time we ride we're stuck, which is why I go back to the LPB, with its better mileage, when touring and stick to the OBG when around town at home. Nor am I going to waste my time synching this thing endlessly to the nth degree--it won't make that much of a diff. after 3 rides.

That's the nature of the beast.

One man's opinion, without tears.

Ah don't let X get to ya...he's just a disgruntled bedwetter who can't tell the difference between the bike forums and Jo Momma

I think you pretty much have it in a nutshell. You can screw with it and screw with it and screw with it, driving yourself nuts in the process, when in fact it just is the way it is and all that time spent screwing around could have been spent riding. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Lee, we've got laws about stalkers where I live. You are beginning to scare me. I take back everything.

Fish,
My RT did the same thing after a dealer service. I put the LPB in before taking it in, just to see what they would do with it. Ran fine for about 2 hours at high RPM or lugging. Then began to show a slight surge at around 2500. I put the jumper back in, and no more problem.

Damn, I wish I was going trail riding with my wife this weekend

I have mostly outsmarted mine

However, I run a Remus sport system, GS intakes, K&N airfilter, Bosch 4417's, and I have the CO pot installed so no CCP. It has great performance, but it is at a cost to fuel econonmy. It is a trade off. I guess it just depends what you are trying to accomplish. Interesting to note, however, is that my fuel economy isn't all that much worse than what it was in stock config. in my everyday stop and go commuting.

ya know, Gordy...I've synch'd the TBs with the LPB, the LGB, and empty socket, and it didn't seem to make any difference during the process. Obviously rideability was affected by the different ccp configs.

I wish there were like a pinkish green bastard (PGB) that maintained the screaming rush at the topend and the low surge at the bottom. No matter.

You have an 1100, right? What's up with the GS intakes? Why do people like them so much? The RT is too heavy to be much fun with the GS powerband. K&N...do a search. Pot...k. Did you set it while hooked up to a gas analyzer?

I like your exhaust choice :):
