Good thing it's a 5 speed. Aren't those the ones that back over your dog and your neighbor's kids on its way to taking a seat on their sofa in the front room?

Also, if I had a daughter in need of an inexpensive car, she would be rolling in one of these without a doubt:
http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/cto/3492245121.html (90 and up have driver's air bag. 91, 92, represent all the incremental improvements that Volvo made over the cars run. 1993 was the last and most desirable year. Buy one for $1,500, put 25k on it, and sell it for $1,500.) |

For the same $1500 a well purchased 1st Gen Legacy wagon will run circles around the Swedish Brick-mobile. The boxer layout has won me over..due to the superior handling (no IPD swaybars needed due to perfect weight distribution) and super easy access to everything in the engine bay. For example, it takes 20 minutes to replace the alternator since it's located up high & central. Compare that to a 7 hour dash removal for a Volvo 240 heater core replacement. Not to mention the Subaru was built in Indiana, USA! If I was going Euro...that Audi 200 wagon is sweet....I've seen it around my neighborhood. Sheeit, that thing is worth $1200 easy as a parts car even if it blew up in the first week of ownership. Claytonroy screwed with this post 12-28-2012 at 09:50 PM Reason: spell check |

I work on, and have owned, multiple Subarus and Volvos. I've also owned and repaired many other types of cars.
I'm not saying I disagree with you. To me, there is no question; Subarus and Volvos are the easiest and most rewarding modern cars to work on for your average home mechanic. They are also two types of cars that happen to be amazingly underwhelming in terms of fuel economy and performance. But, the same liabilities that come along with some Volvos (Dash dis-assembly for the blower or heater core is a perfect example) are reflected in the liability of AWD complexity and headgaskets in 90s era Subarus. Both cars have unique design features that make specific repairs extremely frustrating. Both have specific parts that are absolutely ridiculous to replace and fail regularly (rear wheel bearings in First-generation-Foresters for example.) Both cars also have features that make other repairs a snap; the huge engine bay of the 240 means an alternator can be changed just as quickly as it can on a Subaru. For the record, I've replaced a blower motor in a 240 (Same as heater core), and headgaskets in a 97 Outback. I'd rather do three blower motors than do those headgaskets again. ![]() I've helped friends with high mileage Volvos and Subarus keep them on the road, and I've seen an equal number of disasters. For every FI issue in a 240, there is a Subaru with a diff about to let go. They just really aren't that different. I have friends with 300k Foresters, and I've owned a 300k 240. But, it just depends. To me, It's really hard to categorically say one is better than the other. WB-PDX screwed with this post 12-29-2012 at 12:15 AM |
