They originate from two different fermentation sources. Methanol from wood(now it's made from carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen), ethanol from grain.

I am only a chemist. The fermentation process can produce both methanol and ethanol, I think more ethanol than methanol. So there is generally a little bit of methanol and a whole lot of ethanol. When you distilll the mixture, methanol boils at a lower temperature, so as you heat up the still, the methanol should boil off first. That's why you have to throw the first bit away.
The tricky part is that when you distill mixtures, like mixtures of alcohols, sometimes the various alcohols form azeotropes, which messes up the nice clean distillation process. The azeotroopic mixture comes of together as a blend of methanol and ethanol....
