Round Three. Hopefully this Winter will be more like an amateur boxing match and not a professional. I'm ready to head to the locker room....

Okie Update

Hopefully we just saw the last of the polar vortex. It's supposed to be in the mid-70s here this weekend.

Jax caught me in another thread, and asked about my Dad. It's been awhile since I posted an update, but you FFs are good people so I'll add a few more for anyone interested.

He now has his permanent replacement skull flap installed. No issues.

Things are pretty much back to normal, amazingly. He's still not back to work yet, so he's driving everyone crazy. We're just now convincing him to start using all of this free time in a more constructive manner. He'll have the option to retire in a few years anyway, so he's not sure if he'll even go back to work.

Enough with the social skills, let's get to the good stuff! We have a family gathering every October down in Texas. It's ~250mi, one way. Out of the blue he decides that he wants to ride down there. There was NO talking him out of it. The rest of the family was totally against it, too soon they said. He had to get 'back on the horse' though, and I was the only one that understood it. I probably could've talked him out of going, but it would've crushed him, and I wasn't about to do that. Instead, I said "OK!" and went with him.

It was a Friday, nice day for fall, but a little cool. I had to take off that day, and already had all of my weekend gear packed when I arrived at his house at the time agreed. His bike wasn't outside, which wasn't like him. "He's changed his mind.", I thought, but all of my stuff was loaded and I'd decided to go solo. Walked in the shop, and he's still busy polishing. He hates riding dirty bikes (yeah, all of mine are filthy ).

This is his first time back on a bike since his accident, and he handled it like a champ. It's a good thing that his Valk wasn't the one in the wreck, or he'd have been devastated. He loves that bike.

His only request was that we stayed off of the interstate, so we picked a leisurely stroll on back roads, stopping along the way as needed. It added ~100 extra miles to the trip, but it was a nice day after all!

I wasn't too worried, but I did watch him like a hawk for the first hour or so. Started out slow, and I let him lead to set the pace. It was obvious there wasn't a need for it though, he did great. No bobbles, wobbles, reflexes were quick, etc. Good times.

It was dark by the time we got there, but that didn't stop the rest of the family from seeing the smile on his face. It was at that moment that they understood, and they realized that it was the happiest he'd been since the wreck. He got it. I got it, and now they got it. More than a short road trip, it was a stepping stone to his real recovery.

The second step, and his other passion, was when he went hunting...again, against others' recommendations, including the doctor.

Those two things may seem trivial to some, but to him they were everything. He and I are alike in many ways. Some too much. Others not at all. It has been a trying experience, but I've been able to try and use that connection to help everyone relate. Sometimes I get so aggravated, OK a lot, but it sure beats the alternative to the way things could've gone.

Wow, it's getting misty in here! Thanks to you guys, you know who you are, for all of the support!

T...thanks for the offer..
I was able to find a great fleet shop down here that dabbles in custom bike repairs..they have a nice tire changer as to be careful with the custom wheels. $30/ wheel to replace...not a bad deal in my book.

I also installed the new Leo pipe and Engine guards..

I'm ready for a clear warmer day..
