Classic car insurance?

I have been looking for classic car insurance lately and I can't believe what a pain it's been...

Got quotes from several different companies and half are in the $130/140 range and the others are in the $170/180 range. It's not a lot of money, but I'm wondering why the $40 difference? I specified the same coverage across the board.

Anyone like a particular company? Why?

I checked:

Hagerty
Heacock
JC Taylor
Chubb
Grundy
American Classic
Classic Insurers
Condon & Skelly

I've used Condon & Skelly extensively (25 different cars and as many as 12 at a time) in the past and liked their service, but never had to make a claim. I haven't had a car insured with them in at least ten years, so I don't know how they are these days.

I would appreciate any info.

I have Hagerty on mine. Only require that the cars are in a locked garage and that you have an "everyday" car covered by normal insurance.
Local agent (that covers my bikes) is a rep for them. I like dealing with a real person. Never had to file a claim though.

I asked all these questions in a similar thread here about six months back, and ended up going with American Classic. Hagerty wouldn't touch our camper and Grundy was a bit more expensive, IIRC.

American Classic is one of the higher priced policies ($170), but if they are a good compay it's worth it.

I just checked Leland West and they wanted over $500 and that was with a deducatable...

Nice wheels 71 olds!

Glad I found this thread, as I am restoring a 68 Ford truck and didn't know about the various companies.

I have found extreme limitations on maximum annual mileage that I couldn't live with and ended up with a 47 year old Mercedes on "regular" insurance.

You want to make sure your agent has a copy of any appraisals you have available.

I have my 67 Triumph GT6, 72 Opel GT street car, and the 72 Opel GT GTL race car all with my regular insurance. They are all set to an agreed value, and the rates are pretty darn good. They do require them to be inside, have a "regular" car that is the every day car and in the case of the race car it is covered everywhere execpt the track...even the false grid. When the Fiat gets done I will insure it with them as well.

You might check with your normal insurance company, they might have coverage for classic cars as well.

American National has a classic/hotrod policy called Chrome. Seemed OK when I was interviewing with em, but I didn't get into pricing

I did that for years with my normal insurance (Nationwide). Was paying almost 4 times as much for the same coverage on my '55 Bird (Hagerty).

I just applied with Hagerty.

Why? Bascially because they had the easiest to follow ONLINE application. They made it easy for me.

They have pretty much the same coverage as the rest, not a whole lot of difference that I can see.

I have had Hagerty for years. No claims so far, but the price is good, they answer phone calls, and seem reasonable. I dont mind the mileage restrictions since I dont get anywhere near them anyway.
