So why does one need a high fender anyhoo? This bike doesnt have one--or at least not the front part:

If you look at other pictures of that bike when it's actually racing, they ended up making an extended beak out of duct tape, Evidently too much spray with it like that.

I was gunna say, if you look at a very similar bike, the HP2 Super Enduro, it's beak is a LOT longer than the 800's beak. I think you'd need to extend our beak at least six inches for it to be usable. At least that's what my wife tells me.

Definitely. One option I was playing with before I went with the KTM fender was to have a local shop make me a longer beak out of fiberglass... But since that would have cost $$$, I just went with the true dirt bike setup.

Hey Erling, if you read this; this forum needs a carbon fiber beak!

I agree on the carbon Beak. I alreay PM'ed him to see if one could be done. It would fix all of these issues.... PLEEEEEAAAAASSSSSEEEE!

I love that idea. When I first learned that BMW was coming out with an F8GS I had hoped it was going to be more like the HP2, just a baby version. There is something about that bike that I just like. If it was still in production I would probably have one. Seeing them in action up close in the dirt is pretty awe inspiring.

Not the HP2 but this is what I was imagining would be capable with a conversion kit on an F8 -> an RR type bike. (notice the elongated beak and lack of a fender).

In watching the Dakar this year I noticed that there really is no consensus on the fender issue. Many of the Dakar bikes go with a low fender and no beak. Others use a beak and no fender. Rarely do you see a beak and a fender.

Here's a pic of Cyril Depres bike with just the fender. If these guys don't typically have a problem with it, I'm not so sure it's really the problem -> Brake lines -> yep mine are getting modded.

...... The stock beak looks very nice......But from what I understand.....just needs to be 3 inches longer as suggested by Gpracer???????. I would call it a medium project. It would be made from scratch to stay clear of any copyright issues........ You really think that a 3 inch longer beak will solve the need for a low fender. I think the rear part of the front fender is necessary to protect the rad....... With the crash of Chi.....and people modding the brake lines....there might be a market for this........Let`s keep this open.....

Three inches might do it, but I'd go with something around five or six, similar to the HP2 length. The rear fender would definitely be necessary, and can be sourced from a 650GS like several inmates have done. I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Agreed, 5 to 6 inches longer. It should also follow the original lines as much as possible. I'd really like to see this. Maybe ChiTown still has his stock beak or at least enough of the pieces you could use to make something up.

Last time I asked for a broken piece to study..... It was mistaken, and I got in trouble. So to avoid a similar situation I will just move from scratch......and use my own beak for study. I'l look into it. It might be a week or two, before I can get started. I will post a new thread so as not to divert this one.

Got into some mud today and am so glad I got that frickin stupid low fender off the bike this winter. Well worth the time and money. I'm damn sure I would have plugged up the front tire again if I had not got rid of it. Without it, the tire was able to clear the mud off and keep turning which allowed me to keep riding.

The beak does a decent job of catching the mud. Most of what is thrown forward and high enough to get above it is just watery mud, not much of that even above windshield level. The sticky mud gets flung forward some too once you get back up to speed and the tire starts to clean out. The thumper GS fender does pretty good at keeping the heavy mud off the front of the engine and rad. There was lots caked on the skid plate, but not much above the starter level. I did fashion an add on piece to keep the mud off the oil cooler, and that seems to have been a good decision. The rad is muddy, but its just the wet spray from the puddles, no clumps.
