Somebody may know more than me on this...
But to ride off road technically you do need a green/red sticker to ride off road.
I just plated a bike and had to sign off that I understand that I have to pay both fees.
One for street and one for off highway. Welcome to California.

Most rangers/ police officers see the plate on your bike and don't look any further.
They see you are registered and walk over to the next bike.

Anyone know the facts on this?

They were wrong. Dunerat is right. If this were true that would mean every Jeep in the country was illegally driving when on off highway roads/trails. Just not the case.

Actually, having both registrations is not allowed by most DMVs anymore. I would like dual registration. It allows me to take off my mirrors on a street plated dirt bike and use non DOT tires while offroading without Rangers tiketing you when in a bad mood about something else. Once in a million chance they would. But I have seen them threaten it. I could also NON OP the street reg, saving fees and insurance while keeping green sticker active when street use is not needed.

Bottomline street vehicles can go ANYWHERE motorized traffic is allowed.

Thumb

Thanks for the input on this guys.

Yeah that makes since I guess.

The DMV representative required me to write " I understand that I will be required to pay both fees"" in my statement of facts when I was requesting a plate for my off highway moto.

Which I was happy to do as my palms were sweating as she was completing the paperwork..!!

I think it is about $50 for two years for the green sticker. So I am OK with that.

And Having a plated off highway moto is just awesome!!! And worth the extra money/ insurance too.

Here you go Kali:

Q. Does my OHV need to be registered (identified)?

A. If you are operating it on lands open and accessible to the public for OHV recreation, whether public or privately owned, it must have either a highway license or an OHV sticker. OHV stickers include "Green Stickers," "Red Stickers," and California Nonresident OHV Use Permits. The terms "registration" and "identification" are interchangeable.

If anyone cares to read it from the source, and there's plenty more to read, here it is:

http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=26294

It is interesting to hear your story though, because the guy that I bought this drz 400 from said the same thing and has both a green OHV sticker AND a plate. He also said the DMV told him to sign he would pay for both. I do not plan on paying both, I will pay for the license.

Just a heads up, be CAREFUL riding over at DWF, some a-hole in a RZR/POLARIS type 4X4 truck almost hit me today, his passenger jumped up and pointed at me as he came at me, only then did he kinda swerve and barely missed me, he was hauling ass too, never even stopped, just kept going, be careful out there.
